I havent got into detail yet, but I am really considering the idea of switching to the raw diet. My dog just wont eat the kibble type food, but anything else, he is ALL OVER IT!
Anyways, my questions is, I've seen where you feed them bones, or chicken quarters, backs, etc. I assume the bones are left in them? I have always heard NOT to feed dog chicken bones. Maybe this is an only myth, but I've heard it several times. Is it not true?
Also, what type of bones are okay to feed the dog? I assume you just feed them whole?
I need to find a good book or two to get some ideas and read up on the 'raw diet'.
The best bones to feed your dog are the chicken or turkey backs, necks, or wings..........I only feed the wings when I can't get the backs or the necks.
You do NOT want to feed them cooked! You want to make sure they are RAW, and your dog will eat it all. Look at the books that Ed sells, he has some books on the RAW diet that are good reads.
I also like to give my dog RAW Ox Tails, and I will also give him cut up femar bones where he can get to the marrow. Hope this helps.
Do a search for RAW or BARF. I have all 7 of my dos on raw. The bones are not cooked, it's when they ARE cooked that they will splinter. I feed leg qtrs, chicken/turk/pork/beef necks, beef mix, wings. Ed might have it on his site, but I have the Billingshurst book on RAW. I also used Lauri's spreadsheet to help figure out quantities to feed everyone. Now I just adjust depending on how they look week to week. RAW Dog Ranch
It is bad to fed your dog cooked bones. All raw bones are fine, and it is the main part of the raw diet. If you really are going to get into the diet, order the books on the "Barf Diet" by DR. Ian Billingherst. ED has them on his web site. Also, look for other info on it. I feed it and it is a great diet. It is strange to get used to at first, because were so conditioned to think that feeding these raw foods is bad. However, not too long into it, you'll see how awesome it is, pluss the books help paint a picture of the history and bennefits of the diet.
