I've decided to go with a raw diet (about time) my question is can any one tell me what I should do if I have to board my dogs while I go away? I love my vet And thats where I board them, I just don;t think they will feed them the raw diet. I know that the two simple responces will be: 1) take them 2) find some where that will feed the raw diet.
Hmmmm - would they be willing to mix up and feed The Honest Kitchen dehydrated food? I believe that's what Ed and his staff use when they travel w/their dogs and are unable to feed raw. It's the next best thing from what everyone here seems to say.
Good luck, it's always nerve-wracking boarding your pets, even w/a place you trust. :}
You could also choose a pre-made raw product when others will be feeding your dog.
They often come like hamburger patties, separated by wax paper or some such thing. Unless they are vegitarians they probably won't mind throwing your dog a patty or two. They can even feed them to the dog frozen if they don't want to thaw.
If you want to feed your own diet, just package each days food in individual ziploc bags. Have the caregivers open a bag and dump in in your dog's bowl. Not harder than feeding kibble in my opinion. You didn't ask them to mix it up for them.
Skip supplements and additives (like fish oil) when you are away. The dog won't miss (remember balance over time) and you won't have to leave any crazy detailed instructions.
I tried it one time when I had to go out of state for a funeral. Vet's office was very agreeable, said bring in the frozen raw food, they'd put it in the freezer, yada, yada. I have no idea what went on because when I picked up the dog, about half the food was un-used - and now unusable 'cuz it was thawed. Never again.
Next time, I'd give them individual, marked ziplocks of daily portions of a good kibble, like Innova EVO, which I've already got the dog used to. Make it as simple as possible - no brain required. Basically, the dog needs enough food to survive for a few days in a strange place.
I just wouldn't expect specific directions to filter down to whoever's working at the office after hours, weekends, etc. I wouldn't even bother with supplements and such for a such a short time.
