I'm just curious...at around what age does a gsd start lifting his leg to pee? My boy is 12 months now and I see no evidence of him doing so, he still stretch squats, lol.
I was wondering the same thing. Someone told me they thought they learned to lift their leg only if another male was around for them to learn from? Sounds hokey to me. My pup squats too - the other day he peed on his strap that was hanging down from his vest. LOL! I had to wash it - hope he learns to lift soon! I was thinking that maybe I need to encourage him to lift by taking him by more trees?
I think it really depends on the dog. My retreiver started lifting his leg at 4 months and has never lookded back . His first leg lift was on a woman holding a little female toy poodle with a bow in her hair
I know other males that rarely leg lift even at 3 years +.
My dog has never peed on another person, and has never marked inside, but over all he is big into leg lifting and I find it quite annoying. Count yourself lucky perhaps?
Interested to hear what the GSD owners say, since that is who you asked They seem to talk about them being slow to mature?
My male GSD is 3 now and he goes back and forth. I think it's related to availability of a target and where he and other dogs have gone before. He didn't start lifting his leg though until about 2.

Let's see.... I'm trying to remember how many "why doesn't my male lift his leg" threads that have started, and been ended with a quick comment, including "Some do, some don't, and how does this relate to training?" from Ed......
If I remember correctly, he also said that "peeing on one leg isn't all it's cracked up to be" or something to that effect and he prefers peeing off a porch or something....
Really? Some do and some don't???? I never knew that, I thought this was a given with time. Interesting...I ask because to me this question marks maturity in some fashion or another.
Well at least I am a consistent "asks stupid questions, poster"

I have had two females who did lift their legs to pee, with pee dripping back down the leg that's on the ground.....
But yes, there are some normal adult male dogs who do it late, some who alternate, and even some who never lift their leg.
I think that most male dogs eventually do, neutered or not, but I have never heard a real reason why it would matter...except maybe the peeing-onto-the-front-leg one....
In an effort to add something meaningful to this thread, I'll just say that.....
Our trainer pees on trees. (so does our Beagle, but I'm not gonna make any direct comparisons or anything like that. Our male GSD?? Only sometimes@3yearsold.com)
