If you wrote a letter to the editor (if this magazine even prints those!), maybe they would put it in the next issue. I'd point out that the author of that article worked w/Hills, etc. Maybe it would actually get printed, and if not, at least you tried.
I hate it when people who are biased are quoted as being "an expert." Ugh! Yeah, at expert at giving incorrect information!

Then came the clincher, the best part, "Dogs are omnivores, so about two-thirds of their calories should come from carbs and the other one-third from protein."
Damn, you mean to tell me I've wasted all that money and effort raw feeding my dogs for 10 years when I could have been stuffing them with cheap grain fillers?
My dogs always prefer the raw alligator or chicken over the soy or tofu no matter how often I try to make them vegetarians. Yeah, right!
Always looking for training avenues close to home. Any suggestions? |

What is most disturbing to me is that people have a sheep mentality in this country. If the MEDIA says something either in print or on the tele they believe it as truth and follow it like words outa the Good Book. When are people in this country going to realize that there are hidden agendas everywhere? It's about time that Americans realize that most all they are being fed is hogwash! Our country is going to hell in a handbasket in more ways than I can count and it's because people believe the stupidity that people like this woman generate. Just like lambs to the slaughter. Sure wish we could go back to the days when we had 'good ole fashioned common sense' but that, I'm afraid, has become a lost art.

I order my cases of chicken backs and necks from the grocery and the butchers always look at me oddly (actually everyone in the store looks at me oddly)....guess they were thinking I run a soup kitchen, or something.
So I finally 'fessed up and said it was for my dog. Jaws dropped. "You feed your dog bones????"
Yes, you silly moron, I feed my dog bones. I don't know why I expected anything different from a butcher, but I did.
The kicker always comes from the vet. Your dog looks great, healthy, full of energy, clean teeth...But that raw diet is all wrong.
I just try not to mention it anymore.

very true....sad, but true...
but Ms. Sarah Morris, I must agree with you as well. my old vet used to say the same thing. "What a handsome dog !! energetic, vibrant, very good looking and healthy".
"but you shouldnt be feeding your dog raw human food. a good quality kibble like SCIENCE DIET is more than enough for a dog like yours." <---I'll never understand why she kept pushing that product. I know the vet school probably funded her schooling with Hill's, but when does the integrity of being a knowledgable vet come into play? I switched to a vet with a more open mind AND says if diet is working keep doing it.
cool.
Clarify by spelling every little thing out. Some people can be extreme when drawing their own conclusions. |

I feel that most vets are just repeating what they learned. For some reason, they don't make the connection between the companies that are behind the nutritional training they recieve. But then again, who really looks up the sources of the information they recieve at school...and I'm not just talking vet school, either.
On the other hand, the DVM that Mike is talking about is a pure propaganda artist. I am fairly certain she knows exactly what she is doing, and she is paid very well to do it.

I agree! I have found too many lies to trust the "established wisdom".
I don't get very many odd looks from people when I tell them about feeding my dogs raw, I just go on to tell them how well my dogs are doing and how much they love their food. And my butcher really likes my business. And my vet probably knows it won't do any good to argue with me, or she secretly agrees with me. I'll have her recommending raw to other people eventually.
If you have the mind-set that raw is the best and can tell people why it is, most will not argue. If they do come back with something like "But I thought you weren't supposed to feed dogs bones." I say "That COOKED bones, raw bones don't cause a problem." "But won't bones puncture their intestines?" "Mine have never had a problem, and I never see bones in their poop."
You don't have to site a vet source, YOU and your dog/s are a reference. If you feel you need a vet reference there is http://www.rawmeatybones.com with a vet advocating feeding raw meaty bones for dogs, cats, and ferrets.
Oh, and my cats will steal chicken backs, beef and deer scraps from the dogs if they get a chance. It's somewhat annoying since I feed them the same stuff my dogs get, but they also know that raw is best and they can't get enough.
I am slightly tempted not to spread the word about feeding raw because the price of meat will go up, but I would rather pay more to feed my dogs and see other people feeding their dogs the right way.

Been there, heard that!
I try not to get too detailed anymore - if someone really wants to know what we feed, or what I'm doing with so many pounds of "soup bones" every week, I'll tell them, but I'm over talking it UP (even though I wish everyone with a dog would get a CLUE and stop feeding crap kibble... to each his own). I'm just tired of getting ridiculed by idiots, or chastised by "professionals" - I won't lie if asked, but I'm not going to flaunt my dog's diet, it's just not worth the conversation that ensues. I also won't stand for THEIR lectures anymore either. Respectfully, I say I've done my research, made my decisions, and am MORE than happy with all the results - so they can keep the scare tactics to themselves.
Hopefully the tide will turn someday soon and it'll be easier to find more raw feeding support in the veterinary world - maybe a whole new field of canine nutritionists (NOT funded by giant kibble companies) will spring forth... but until then, I'm getting a lot better at researching on my own and standing up for myself regarding the choices I've made. And I dare any vet to look purely at the health of my dog and tell me I'm doing it wrong!

About the students at vet med schools not bothering to find out about the source of their "nutrition" information: HA! I know a forum member who is in vet school, and she says they are inundated with stuff (lab coats, back packs, pens, and on and on) emblazoned with "Hills."
As for the Hills (et al) propoganda: How many times has someone here posted a link to a "scientific" article about the horrors of fresh food, and then we finally track down the author's resume -- straight to a Hills executive position.
On the bright side: I get my meats at a natural foods store with a butcher counter. Once when he handed over my as-is fowl and ground-up parts, along with livers, etc., he said "Oh, it's you! I thought it was for another customer who orders her dog's food the same way." When I looked surprised, he said "Oh, we have lots of customers who get their raw food here."
A THRILLING MOMENT!!!
