After reading the extensive article of Carol on the raw diet, I started Basco, my GSD on the raw diet three days ago (he is 2 and a half yrs old). Just a while ago he vomited a small amount of white, yellowish substance. Should I be concerned? I do not want to change back to the commercial dogfood.

That's not uncommon on ANY diet, actually.
Was he empty-stomached?
Is he on the Leerburg sample, or close? Poultry backs or quarters, etc.?
Are you feeding twice a day?

Yes, it was Cindy's article, sorry.... I do not live in the US, so I have to buy meat ready for human consumption, which is a challenge because here they only sell the parts that people buy the most, so there are no necks or backs for sale here. I was feeding him once a day. By the way, I do not know what quarters are, but are chicken drumsticks ok?

Yes, it was Cindy's article,
Just want to give credit where credit is due although I wish I could write informationals like that....
Same question as I asked David....are you giving a probiotic, plain LIVE-CULTURE yogurt or kefir ( thanks Connie) with the meals? This helps aid in the digestion process. Also, if your feeding legs, are the bigger or smaller? If you have or want to, you can cut the ends (knuckel or joint pieces) and start with that until he gets used to it. I think those pieces are the hardest to digest for a dog that is just starting out.....

In two years of raw feeding my current GSD, she has thrown up a couple times (that I know of!) like you described and both times went back to it before I knew what she was doing. Unless it became a frequent thing, I wouldn't be concerned. As my dad would have said, maybe "his eyes are bigger than his belly"
Unless you have a rare breed of backless chicken there , you may be able to order them from some stores. They obviously don't sell well in a market, but I've had grocers look in their order book and they found they were able to order them even though they don't usually have a call for them. I've had some say they would sell a smaller amount.
You might want to consider investing in a good meat grinder (e.g., search this forum for Northern grinder - $100) and then watch for specials on cheap whole chickens and grind 'em up. The grinder would pay for itself in a few months.

Well, no, Carol, I have not started with raw meat on the bone yet, but I will try the plain yogurt I (I eat it ,too), thnx.
He may have vomited a bit, but just now he finished his food (today's menu: chicken gizards today with 1/4 cup of raw mashed spinach)in less then five minutes. On the kibble and bits diet it took like 15 to 20 minutes, so one thing is certain, he likes it.
I hope his coat will have improved by the 30 of November because my daughter will have a speech in english in school about GSD's and I get to do a little show. She will mention the benefit of raw food also. Hopefully there won't be other dogs or cats because then the show will be about a chasing dog
P.S. It this just my idea, or does the farts smell a little stronger, also?

Thank you, Mike
I was indeed planning the buy a meat grinder. But I doubt I can have my grocer order these parts only for one customer. I am not a trainer, but businesses are my specialty. Here nearly all goods are imported and are 3x the prices in the US. So it would not be profitable. I could expand the market however by going door to door and convincing all dog owners to feed their dogs fresh food...a big challenge as most people here do not eat quality meat themselves 7x a week . But it is a fact also that there are a lot of obese people here so maybe I could convince them to eat less and spend more money on 2 good causes : their health and quality food for their dog

I will let Connie or Cindy address the organ meat issue, but one thing is, you do not want to feed an overabundance of organ meat.
Chicken quarters are the thigh/leg portion of the chicken.
You may want to start with wings if you cannot get backs and necks.
With my dogs, gas is less and does not smell near as bad as kibble gas unless I feed too much turkey.

Ok, so I can use chicken legs and wings also, allright Carol, thank you for the advice. I will incorporate these also in his diet.
