Hello we are retraining(he hast worked for 2 yrs ) our mal and we are really having a hard time with him, see the problem is when he bites the sleeve and we slip the sleeve to him , he will not hold on to the sleeve after. he drops it right away. so my question is how do we correct this? thanks alot guys Erin
Depending on what you mean by "Work". If he fully commits to the bite, and is not having any other issues besides dropping the sleeve then I wouldn't worry about it. Is his prey drive high? A non-sleeve happy patrol dog is every PSD handlers' dream so long as there are no other issues associated with the lack of sleeve interest.
hey thanks for replying! yes he has full mouth bites when he hits. so if its not that big of a deal. then why are they making it one lol?he has drive just not with toys. so they told me to roll a towell and play with him like that.

What they do in one of the clubs i go to is this,
If a Dog wants to get rid of the sleeve after tbe bite too quickly the best way is as soon as it bites and holds on to the Sleeve is to run around with him in a circle talkng to him all the time, then bring him back to the Pakwerker who will catch hold of the Sleeve and taunt the dog into holding on to it, he then lets go and you run around again talking to your dog saying he is a good boy etc, come back to the pakwerker again and repeat, They do not want you to give him the command 'Out' or as we say 'Loss' that is important It will boost the Dogs Confidence and he will hold onto it a lot longer after a few goes that is what happens over hereWhen the Dog is going for the Pakwerker we Say to the Dog the word 'Revie' several times meaning attack

If you want the dog to hold the sleeve, also be sure he is being worked in prey. The sleeve should have a leash or line attached to it so the helper can slip the sleeve but the helper can continue to hold it and run with the handler.
Sorry, I just realized this is the protection training forum. What I said only applies to schutzhund sport, I don't know anything about ppds.

hm... OK i will be the one that says it.
I think this is great. You should not want to (read: I would not want to) change this. Your dog is not dependent on the equipment. After you slip him the sleeve then have the decoy agitate with nothing on and see what the dogs response is, does he go after the sleeve laying before him? or the decoy?

when the sleeve is droped and he is then agitate he will go after the decoy NOT the sleeve.so if being said then i will let him keep doing what he is doing then. do you agree? we have training again this coming sunday. so any input will really help me. we would like to do PSA work with him as well.he is being trained by a k9 officer (he owns the training center and teaches) not sure if it really matters lol.
