I would have never noticed this before coming on this site, but I have learned to be more aware of what dog food contains Yesterday I was at the grocery store (Hy-Vee), and they had a small refrigerator case full of Homestyle Select dog food (in the "roll" type packaging, like sausage). I almost bought a roll, just to see how Kodee liked it, but then decided to do a little research first. Which includes asking you all if you've ever heard of/used this food before. Their web site is
http://www.homestyleselect.com/questions/index.htm
The food is supposed to be 100% natural, but instead of being raw, it's "gently cooked" (whatever that means). It's never frozen, etc, and must be refrigerated. They used "light pasteurization" to kill bacteria/parasites. The ingredients list looks pretty good (fresh chicken and fresh turkey are the 2 main ingredients in the puppy food, which also contains liver, carrots, and other ingredients). I didn't see if the meat is "human grade" like Orijen uses, but I kind of doubt it. However, their foods weren't affected by the pet food recalls, according to their site.
I already am happy with the food Kodee eats (Orijen and will be adding THK as soon as it gets here), but was wondering about using this occassionally to get a little more variety in his diet. I'd appreciate any input you all may have. Thanks!

I personally have never heard of this food.
I don't really like the rice bran but that's just me.

Yeah, I noticed the rice. I like the grain-free Orijen, but I was just wondering if Homestyle Select would be beneficial or not as a "supplement" so to speak.

Occasionally, for variety.... maybe. :>
Regularly, not so much. I have certainly seen MUCH worse foods, and actually think this one looks pretty good in comparison with the whole spectrum, but I don't want to feed rice bran or brewer's rice (or any grain fractions) even more than I don't want to feed grains as is, and I don't want to feed two of the highest-sugar vegetables on a regular basis, in proportions like that.
With some tweaking, that could've been a far better food. Too bad.

Thanks - I think I'll just skip it altogether. That's why I wanted to ask all of you first. I forgot about the fact that "brewer's rice" and "rice bran" are just basically leftover parts. I also didn't think about the sugar in the peas and carrots. The main reason I chose Orijen and THK for Kodee's main foods was b/c they are meat-based and grain-free. Duh! I'm glad I have you guys here for assistance!

Orijen and THK are great choices, IMO, for commercial foods. Someone in our club feeds Orijen or Timberwolf (I forget which) and uses Wellness canned no-grain for variety. (Wellness now has some kibbles and cans that are 95% meat and no grains.)
I even bought a couple of cans last week to keep with the THK (which I always have on hand for travel or no-meat times).

Ji
If i may just go off the subject of Dog food for a moment
A few days ago i went over to Genk in Belgium to Order a Dog Trailer to pull behind the car, The firm is German and it sells world Wide in cluding in Brunswick USA it is WT Metall
Top class trailers but i only want a two Dog Box
Anyhow this fellow who is Agent for the German Company Breeds Rottweilers and he has been World Champion with Show Dogs Six Times and been around Dogs 40 years and i must say they looked in beautiful condition when he showed them to me
in the house we were talking about Dogs and Feeding them in General and He said he Feeds his Dogs on a German Based Food,
Which is Based on Large Pellets and Flakes etc, The Base it seems is Beef from the Head, Other Parts including Organ Meat It comtains no additives or Colours etc and has no added smell ingredients etc to make it palatable to the Dogs Unfortunatly the Site is only in German but you may be able to follow it http://www.kobers.de
The Comments of Connie etc would be interesting, and it may be of interest to Mike In Belgium

I feed Nature's Variety. They have three lines Raw, Instinct (grain free), and Praire. My dog actually does best on Praire, it's also nice because there are at least five different types of proteins you can rotate with each bag without having to worry about disruption. http://www.naturesvariety.com
