Tim Redd Webboard User Reg: 02-17-2005 Posts: 104 Loc: Iowa Offline	I'm totally for the raw diet. How do you guys grind up the bones? My food processer won't do it. We live in a small town and there isn't a butcher shop. It seems to me that the bones would be too hard for a puppy.

Start off by holding on to the neck and let the pup chew the other end, this will discourage trying to swallow the whole thing. Don't be alarmed if the pup regurgitate some bones, just means it needs more chewing, which the pup will happily comply (yuk). I feed the whole leg quarters, if I cut them up, the food gets swallowed whole, so they have to work for their food now! Maggie

I personally like to get big beef soup bones for my dogs that they can't easily break up... the dogs grind them down more than break them. I imagine it cleans their teeth pretty well. With that said, I have a friend that has a boxer that he feeds chicken quarters w/bones and hasnt had any problems. It was just something I had read and could see if possibly happening and just did not want to risk it myself... I thought about how much a vet trip for a blocked intestine might be and decided on large bones.

I feed my 14 and 16lb terriers whole, large leg qurters with absolutely NO problems. When I first started, I tried breaking them up. that seemed to cause more yacking for a second chew, so now I just let them have at it. old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks

Chewing up the pieces is better than yacking them up for the second round...ummm warm meal... It also provides great exercise for the head, jaw and neck muscles. Never had a problem & my girl is a gobbler. She does better with the bigger bones 'cause she has to do some chewing otherwise she would just swallow it whole & still will do just that with the smaller pieces after she chews off big chuncks. I used to cut the turkey necks into smaller pieces when she was younger but she still only chewed a little & then swallowed. So I have to figure that they know what they are doing. MY DOGS...MY RULES

Or you might try one of the pre-packed raw foods like Bravo or K9 Kraving that is available in some areas. But I think that if they are not really ground up well you will promote swallowing without chewing at all if the bones are on the smaller size. I think that I would rather that my dog did some chewing instead of just totally swallowing it all up. MY DOGS...MY RULES

Patricia Powers Webboard User Reg: 07-08-2003 Posts: 342 Loc: Offline	i have a hand-held pruning shears like you would use on rose bushes or other shrubbery that i keep in the kitchen for cutting up meat/bones for the dogs. works very well. any yes, you do have to be careful how much you feed for bones. we had an episode last summer where gerda had to go to the vet........severly constipated. no harm done, but gave me quite a scare. now i just make sure that there is plenty of meat and fat with the bones to compensate for the dryness. if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers

Donna Rednour Webboard User Reg: 12-16-2004 Posts: 32 Loc: Offline	I've tried breaking up bones for my 12 year old - her teeth are not in the best condition - but what concerned me there were the shards and splinters they looked worse to me than allowing them to chew the bones up themselves. Now I just give her more chicken necks, ground meats, organ / muscle meat and fish than products like leg quarters or backs. I've also gone through the constipation episode with this dog, worse with turkey necks, so I make sure she gets pumpkin, bananas and/or apple cider vinegar when she gets more bones. It has helped giving her the ground meats and fish too. At 12 I'm not so concerned about the amount of bones (calcium/phosphorus) for her. Donna Rednour http://www.germandogs2.com
