This link explains... http://vetmedicine.about.com/library/weekly/aa041599.htm Where you live and the life cycle of mosquitoes there will determine when to give preventative for heartworm. i'm in FL , so my pup will be on a heartworm preventative all year round.

I mean what climate? I live in a climate where we have almost no months that are cold enough for zero heartworm risk. Don't fool around with heartworm. You want to prevent it, not treat it.

I had a rescue dog many years ago that had heartworm and I believe the treatment at the time was arsenic; She survived the arsenic, but just barely. Not sure if that's still the treatment though..

Older than 6 months, most vets will ask for a blood test, which you can *usually* waive. But be aware that giving heartworm preventative to a dog that has adult-stage heartworms can be dangerous.
