okay, so i take off from work a little early because i wanted to take the pup out and exercise her in yard for a while. I came home, did the old ignoring routine, at which point she whines and whines and whines for about 30 minutes. when she finally calms down for about 10 minutes straight, i let her out and take her out in yard for a energetic 30 minutes. i bring her back in, let her eat, and put in crate and then she starts going through the whining again. It's been almost 2 weeks, is this normal? everytime i am out of sight, it starts immediately. and continues for about 15 minutes or so on average, everytime. I don't cave but the fact that it happens everytime is very irritating. another odd thing, i think, i say say 'let's go crate' and she immediately hops in there. if she hated it that much you would think i would have to shove her in there.
I had the same thing going on....once he caught a glimpse of me he'd whine...unless of course he's tired from exercise. he also does this just before feeding time...or if I go out and grab his food bowl, he'll cry when I go back in the house to heat up the water and stir in the THK. He finally stopped doing the 4am wake up call jus before his first feeding..hehe
Clarify by spelling every little thing out. Some people can be extreme when drawing their own conclusions.

not sure what the mark is, i am new to this.
How do you indicate to the dog that the behavior is good?
What I'm getting at is that the minute she was quiet, I would mark that; after ten minutes, I doubt that she has any mental connection between being quiet and the reward (attention, etc.).

P.S. Maybe clearer: If ignoring her happens both when she is whining AND when she has been quiet for nine minutes, how does she know that quiet brings rewards? You see?
If I were ignoring my dog so as not to reward whining, waiting for quiet to let her out, I'd probably praise and reward the minute she stopped whining so she would see the connection.
Makes very good sense. i am hoping this weekend to have good bunch of crate sessions with her, where i can sit there watching and waiting for her to be quite and immediately reward and 'set the marker' for good behavior. obviously that is impossible with me being at work. i have to do what i can. I was thinking the same thing though, after ten minutes of being quite, she is usually asleep, so she probably has no clue what I am trying to do. i will try this and i would say it will work.
