Hello All and thank you for allowing me into your forum. I am a trainer for many years of basic and intermediate OB. I'm here to learn not to boast. My question is about my newfie mix.His prey drive is still so strong at 31/2 yrs old I am at a loss. I practice all the same methods as most everyone here so your not going to offend me in any way. I have work with remote training on him with some improvment but still is not relieable off leash. He will still bolt at the site of a squirrel, rabbit, cat, etc..I have used every trick in my bag and am hoping someone here will have a new one I have not tried. If you need I can go into more detail. thank you.

Steve,
How are you training with the e-collar? Low stim?

I started out on low stem with very little reaction. I did find a level that brought him back at about 20 feet away. We worked at this level for a few months and when I thought he was ready we tried it without. He went right back to square one. Along with the prey drive his anxiety level is out the roof which is another problem all together.

Are you sure he is not "collar wise"? I have a Mal that I conditioned to the collar, but made a few mistakes and she is collar wise. Now I am trying to "undo" those mistakes.

This is very possible. I do put his prong or remote collar on at least a hour before any kind of training. That's not to say he hasn't caught on. He's a funny dog. He turned on and off his extreme behaviors very fast. He go's from level 1 to level 10 and back again in a flick of an eye. So do you have any suggestions to fix the collar wise mistake on my part? Should I just let him wear it more often and then take it off without any training have started to read all the e-books here. I feel confident in the use of this tool but will read the section on e-collar training anyway. I'm sure I will learn something.

The DVD of Ed's above on e-collar training is excellent. Very informative and he explains things really well.
I am just trying to "start over" with Jesea and it is helping.

Steve,
Welcome.
I've been waaaaayyyyy off base before, and half expect to be told how ignorant I am being now, and out of curiosity mostly I think, but what could bring out a prey drive in a Newfie? Any ideas on the mix?
Also this anxiety, how does it manifest? Hmmm, what tigers it? What is the result and how is it handled. Does it interupt the prey or seem to exasperate the problem. Or is it a separate issue all together?
Is the dog giving you the finger on command or is he/she just going into drive too quick to catch? As a pro you can say her/his ob. is up to snuff?
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

Randy, you are not off base at all IMO. I was just contemplating asking those questions myself.

Heck Carol,
I've never owned a Newfoundland. Observed a more than a few, and know a few, but have never seen what I would call a prey drive in any. A few though, does not a breed make. So I thought maybe there's something I don't know.
Has anybody out there ever seen a Newfie chase down a rabbit? A cat?
Hmmm, should I start another thread?

I have seen Newfies very driven to do water work in SAR, however it is a VERY different kind of drive IMHO.
I would not say that I know what drive it is, I think it is more instinct.....
They seem to remind me of hounds, kind of lazy (which is in no way bad), but when asked to work, they get er done for ya.
Although bloodhound puppies are in no way, shape or form lazy (hell, I got the scars from Jiggs to prove it from his jumping around, who by the way, has found a great home with a South Carolina Patrolman) ....just when they get to be mature like my ole boy.
