I just got a call from an aquaintance who had a litter of pups this past Saturday. She knew that we had bred GSD's for years and wanted to make sure she was giving the dam proper nutrition. I asked what she was feeding now and she stated that she was feeding the female what the vet had recommended. He actually told her to feed her nursing female Purina Puppy Chow and vanilla ice cream. ARRGHH!! Of course I gave her a link to Leerburg's diet and to the list of all natural kibbles. When are these crap food peddling vets going to wise up? Sorry, just had to vent.
Sorry but even when I knew next to nothing about dog nutrition I ran away from any food with the word "chow" in it
The vet = horrible/dangerous advice is extremely common and unfortunate in that it happens and that it is not limited to nutrition. There are a lot of vets that give training and behavioral advice without any knowledge on the matter, and there are vets that improperly diagnose and treat animals all the time.
Oi. Can O Worms. Or should I say I've opened a can of snakes? Either way a lot of people know that me + veterinarian tends to = unhappiness in various ways. After volunteering in a few vets offices and having knock down drag outs with several vets over the past few years I almost gave up on them completely.
I try to keep hope up, however, as I know that there really are vets out there that are knowledgable and friendly who are not 100% bottom line motivated.

Just Kidding
Honestly, I am as mortified as everyone else. I would take Connie's advice and find a new vet. Glad to see that you are trying to help your friend out.

Thanks for the link, Connie. I am sending her all the links that I can on this site. And yes, I am definitely advising her to find a new vet. Hopefully, she will take my advice. I'm sure that most of ya'll have experienced the glazed look in peoples' eyes when you tell them about the best nutrition for their dogs. They nod and smile and then go back to their same old routine, mumbling under their breath about the crazy lady who feeds her dogs raw. SIGH!
The last vet that suggested ice cream for my dog was a specialist. The dog had about 3 weeks to live. She died from hemangia scarcoma in/of/on her spleen.
While she did get some ice cream during those three weeks, I think he meant it more figuratively then literally.
I'll never forget his kind quiet last words. 'Give her plenty of ice cream'.
