Can anyone tell me if the blue gene in a Mal is good or bad? I can't seem to find anything on it. I am trying to find a female and the one that I have found is a pup that carries the blue gene.
It isn't a Dutch. The dam is Herra Grace which is out of Heartland's Deja Blue and Guardian One Slick Chick and the Sire is Ferro-Hazi Panda which is out of Firefox IVO and Voros Pimpernel Carla. They are saying that the pup carries the blue gene. It is a lighter pup - doesn't have the dark mask.
I have never hard of it either and I am just trying to figure out if it is a bad thing or good thing. I know in Dobies people go on about the blues and now the whites - which is NOT a good thing to have or want.

I guess it depends on what you are planning to do with the dog (ie breeding) or if it a genetic flaw that may cause them to be susceptible to different things.....hmmmmmm....Interesting.
Can you ask who you are looking at obtaining the pup from? If they seem "fishy" about their answers, or you find out one thing and they tell you another, I would not buy from them.

I agree with you. I just thought that I would check around first and see what I could find out about it. I am needing a female to work in Personal protection but also one that I can breed later on down the road.
That is why I am concerned.
They are advertising the blue gene to be a wonderful thing, but like I stated earlier so are the ones breeding and raising white dobermans.

In general, the gene for "blue" or "Blue merle" is a recessive gene that ONLY governs coat/skin color (pigmentation). The dangerous thing about the blue gene is that if a "blue" dog of a certain breed becomes extremely popular (as blue pit bulls are right now) people will breed any blue's they can find, even to the point of inbreeding, which leads to a lot of horrible side-effects. Not the least of which is poor temperament and nerves.
I don't think that this is a problem with the malinois breed, since Belgian Malinois are so rare and are almost religiously bred for working ability, which precludes any consideration of coat coloring.
EDIT: If the dog has the temperament to work, I don't think the blue gene will adversely effect its working in any way. HOWEVER, I am ALWAYS leery about a breeder that advertises an ambivalent trait as a "great thing to have".
