hi! Im new at this and im a novice instructor, weve been open about 1 year. Any help is welcome and please let me know if im doing this right. I have a 10month old dog who begs, whines, rolls over ect when its time for training. I own a pet boutique so usually around 2-4 its slow and i will potty break all 4 dogs, group train, then ind. train. if i get busy and cant train well 3 continue sleeping and the 1 acts up.I think im doing right by putting him in a sit, stay or down stay until I train him when I say its time not when he demands it. This is not going to break his desire for training? will it teach him patience? Ive never had a dog want training so badly???? am i messing up? Ive put the bark collar on him and he just high pitches it, should i have the training collar on him and give him a high level correction? Like i said im new at this level of dog and training and dont know what to do. Other than thiswhen we do train he is wonderful does everything i want him to do.

So it is only between 2 and 4 that you train with him?
Sounds like he may be conditioned to the fact, that at that time during the day something happens and he is anticipating that.
I would change up training routines and times.

Sounds to me like the dog is bored out of his skull.
What is the exercise routine? ie. how much does he get through out the day? It may be time to start doing some more demanding work if he's getting adequate exercise.
A high level correction for barking? Barking for perhaps more of something. A resounding NO.
If my dog isn't learning , I'm doing something wrong.

thanks for all the replys
we walk 1 hour in the am, we walk to work 3 days a week (a 20 min walk)and the other 2 days we also walk 1 hour in the pm.
on the weekend we trail ride and the dogs go along. once we are in the shop of course they see new dogs for play in daycare on a daily basis, they also get max socilization from different people and dogs comming in every day.
I do try to mix it up and train in the am, but as with most businesses we have a slow time after lunch until 4;30 5pm when people get off work. but just this morning he started it in the am cause we had mixed it up a little and did some morning sessions.

What type of training are you doing? Could it possibly be that the dogs needs something more to do than just obedience? Like, retrieving or something?
What breed of dog?

Even a 3-minute session of upbeat motivational basic ob every time you can is better than nothing.
A game every time the store empties out..... Teach a trick ... Play hide-and-seek.....
Teach "quiet." You must have some treats there! :>

I have a similar problem with my pup. He really needs the stimulation. When there isn't time to run him out to play or work the agility equipment, I hide one of his toys. A sit-stay, I hide it, release him to find it. It works well even when I have customers. You can get really creative with hiding it also, in boxes, under shelving, it's fun, and it's easy when you just can't leave for a quick game of fetch.

carol and connie,
thanks, i am really going to mix it up. i think i answered my own question by reading my own post like it was someone else and answer it. all 4 of my dogs are conditioned by commin to work and leaving at the same time. if a customer is in late past 6:30 they are all ready to go. same as in the am if i get keys they line up for the car if i get leash they line up in a different place for that.we try to walk differnt ways but there are only so many differy ways to go 1/4 mile you know lol. but i am going to try shorter times not all or none cause its only going to be busier before xmas. All my dogs are mixed breed, average dogs. they are not the high drive, hard rinsport type dogs. Dozier is they pup i have been talking about and we have no idea what king of dog he is we did a dna test and it came back nothing for primary or seconday. but they onlt terst for like 38 breeds. he looks like a blue thai ridgeback with a little more coat and white marking on the chest and feet like a basenji, but we live in a small town and they are way to exotic of dogs for him to be mixed with. I cant figure out how to put a picture of him cause i would love anyones opinion on what he is cause hes a good looking unusual dog. like i said before i have 4 mixed breeds
chow/lab, schnoodle mix, ridgeback mix and doze and every day i get 3-5 people ask me whay breed of dog he is never any of the other dogs its funny. this was my first post it any forum ever!
but you can go to our myspace and i think you find it by my email which is jackiemixon@hotmail.com. But as far as the doze goes i should not be afraid of squashing his drive learning. i feel stupid if it were any other bad bahavior i would stop him from doing it, i would let him run in the road.... i have raises this dog since 4 weeks old when he was put in my care as a foster pup with 2 brothers. he just wants to please he will never stop doing that.
thanks thanks!!!!!

Jackie,
Believe me, I don't want to put you on the defensive, I'm like everybody else here, only interested in helping, if possible, find the key to your problem.
Others may disagree with me on this point; but contary to your assertion that the dogs drive can not be squashed, or that he will always want to please, is not entirely true. You may be right that the dog will always want to learn, but you can take the spirit right out of him. Have you ever seen a dog go threw a routine perfectly, close to acing it, otherwise though the dog was absolutely flat. No life, real interest or joy in the job. One meets those kind of dogs off the course and they are exactly the same..... just flat. Their spirit has been broken. And you are probably right the dog will always want to please, he can learn that pleasing you means shutting down. More spirit killing lessons, but he will always want to please. So think carefully about what it is your want him to be when he grows up and how you're going teach him to please you.
It sounds to me like you have a high energy dog that needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation. It's a real challenge to get them through to adulthood in good balance. Step up to that challenge.
The journey is its own reward.
Randy
