Hi again, you may hear a lot from me for the next little while cuz I'm just starting the raw diet with my 5 month old pup and keep running into Q's. I love this forum and have found valuable advice and answers by reading through, so thanks. My dog has been eating chicken necks for 6 days with 1 or 2 intermittent runny stools. Otherwise good stools, but then another diarrhea this morning. Ugh. He shows no signs of illness or discomfort. Can I move along to add some organ meats or ground beef. Or should I just keep doing the chicken.....and for how long??
Thanks!
ps. I do give him probiotics sprinkled on his meat about once a day. Last night he had a tsp of veggies (lettuce and zucchini) with a turkey heart, for the first time.

You can dial down the veg for a few days and see if his stools improve. Generally, I would wait for 2 or 3 days of solid stools before I added Organ meat...It's better not to add new variables until old ones have cleared up.
I'd think you'd be ok to introduce muscle meat, however ground beef is very rich and may not be your best choice. What about some chicken breast, skin on? When I made the switch with both dogs, each one was on JUST RMB's for about 4 days, then JUST RMB's and Muscle Meat, for another 2 or 3, then I introduced Organ, then veg. Yogurt the whole time, and salmon oil /vit e the whole time.

EXACTLY what are you feeding? Necks only, no skin? No, I would not move along to anything until what you are giving is not triggering diarrhea.
So exactly what parts, with skin or without, and what else are you giving? It will be something fatty/rich, almost certainly, like too much skin at first, or organ meat...... or too much food, period, or not enough bone.

Exactly. And no moving ahead if the present "plateau" is triggering loose stools.

The chicken necks have no skin on them. I am feeding him 2 in the morning and one at night. I have given him yogurt 2 or 3 times this week, should I give him some everyday? In the meantime I will stick to just the necks, the salmon oil and vit. E, and no other extras and see if this clears up.
Thank you both for your input. Please can you let me know if there is anything I should be watching for otherwise? Thanks!

I should add that he will also get about 1/4 cup of Zuke's Mini Natural Salmon dog treats a day as we are in the Learning Phase with lots of his training right now. I don't think that should be a problem but I'm no expert. Thought I should at least mention it. BTW, he is about 10 pounds.

What is the weight of the food you are giving?
(Necks vary quite a bit in size. That sounds like it could be a LOT for a ten-pound dog, and diarrhea is often triggered by overfeeding, period..... but the weight will tell us.)
Also, have you had a fecal done for worms?

I agree w/Connie. 3 necks of anything but parakeet is a lot for a 10lb dog. I give my 35lb pup that amount, and he is not losing weight. Too MUCH food is always at the top of my suspect list for diarrhea.

Inversely, too little can lead to constipation. So can a lot of other things, but it's good to know.

That is good to know about the overfeeding. I roughly figured that 3 necks would be about 1/2 pound but maybe that doesn't sound right (I bought 60 necks which was 10 pounds?). Since they vary in weight that could be why he'd have 2 or 3 good stools and then a runny one on another day. Also, my pup is pretty skinny I think so I will take a sample in to the vet for a parasite check. He's also not drinking a lot of water anymore, is that normal?
I really appreciate your direction on this as we get started.
