Green Bay currently has two police K9's. The police officers union has a contract dispute with the administration. The way things stand right now the K9 program will end on January 1 and the officers have been told their police dogs will be euthanized.
So I ask that you take the time to sign the petition or contact the Green Bay Police Chief and voice your position.
Call & complain to Jim Arts, Green Bay Police Chief, who has much say about the future of these dogs & this valuable program. 1-920-448-3200 or fax at 1-920-448-3248!!
If you visit other web board I would ask that you post this information on as many boards as possible. The threat of Killing police service dogs should never be a negotiating issue for a pay dispute. How unprofessional is that???
Unbelieveable. I'm attaching a letter on official department letterhead and sending it first thing in the morning. I know bargaining can be tough, but that's beyond reason.

That is unbelievable stupid, if they don’t want to continue their K9 Program they should donate those animals to either another law enforcement or military agency. To put them down is not only disgraceful, but a huge waste of tax payers dollars.
though it says retired with only a possibility of being put down, even a small possibility is too high. Is there any way they can be sent to another department, or worked in another way? The article mentions concern over their transition to being regular pets because of their drive to work, so just modify the job. Could they go to a schutzhund trainer, or even used as examples in classes for officers and their k-9's? I don't really know a lot about retired police dogs, but i know with all dogs, any job is better than no work to do, and euthanasia.... It seems like these dogs are well trained, and because of that, would transition just fine, especially if they are given to their handlers.
I'm going to send an example of what happened here. An officer died as a result of a squashed K9 program. It cost the Sheriff his job. The program was reinstated afterwards. Smart move by the new sheriff!

Good for you Howard! I'm planning on calling them tomorrow and asking if there is any truth to the rumor that there is a possibility that two fine dogs are going to be euthanized because of budget cuts and contract negotiations....
Anyone know anyone with any media contacts in that neck of the woods?
Okay, the thread that Ed started about the Greenbay Police dogs that were going to be euthanized due to a stupid union dispute didn't get read by me for several days. The heading made me think, oh here is another sad tale that I don't want to read. (I avoid these posts, they make me cry :cry However, this morning I read it and realized this was a post I could do something about. They have a petition that we can sign to help with the saving of these fine officers/dogs.
I wanted to start a new thread to tell you all that I was the 991st person to sign the petition to help try and save these two dogs. They are attempting to reach 5000 signatures, that means they have a long way to go. If we all sign it that will take the tally way up real quick and it would be fun to see that tally go up on the thread, just a thought guys!
