On a site I was looking at, they recommend feeding the dog exclusively on Scent Pads for several months. Is this a widely held practice? Tracking once or twice a day and delivering a full meal each time for months? I can see how this would develop a love for scent pads, definitely...but it seems...excessive.

Alrighty then. One more question; does it help at all to do this work at night? It seems it would reduce the ability to rely on sight, but I could be totally off-base in that assumption.
It'll reduce your ability to rely on sight also.
So if any kibble pieces fall outside of the scent pad, you may not notice them, and that can lure your beginning dog off the scent pad and into problems.
You'll see your dog starting to "get it" when he leaves the pad and immediately returns. He's starting to figure out the connection of disturbed soil/grass with the food. At night you couldn't see where your edges are.

I think it'll be harder to make raw food not visible within the scent pad, is this something I should worry about? Just cut everything up and go from there?
You don't want a strong smelling food. It takes longer for the dog to "connect" if the scent is to good. We use freeze dried liver.
I always track when the dog is hungry. Just never did use it for everyday feeding. Not that it's wrong, I just never did.
Also the freeze dried is less attractive to ants in the hotter weather.

That's what I used too, or bits of home-microwaved white chicken "jerky." Not oily, not very smelly...... also doesn't take a long time to chew. :>
