So after much procrastonation I've finally joined the boards. I have a 2 year old dobie (Bond)who is just a pet and frankly could never be anything more. I'm looking to purchase another dobe in the near future for schutzhund and maybe protection work. I work at a veterinary clinic and oh my god, everybody knows how to train a dog! It really has been getting to me lately. The resident "trainer" and I use that term loosly seems to think that there is nothing a gentle leader cant fix. And
today I walked into a room and a woman was alpha rolling a 6 wk old puppy for play biting. Stupid stuff like that all the time! I'm going to pull my friggin hair out! I'm a firm beleiver in Ed's philosophy of training dogs. It has not failed me yet.

Hee hee, this post made me laugh. Welcome to the forum and glad to have you. We will help you and unfortunately, we all have our own "know everythings" that we have to put up with.

Not a Dobe person, but there are several here that can help and I know that Cindy had dobes as well.

As far as the "training" methods you are surrounded by are concerned, I feel your pain . I think after awhile you get good at tuning it out. In the meantime though, it's a warm fuzzy feeling to know that the training philosophies that YOU choose to emulate actually work, and that you don't need to live with the other peoples' dogs!
Welcome, same reason I joined, bad training and advice. Should have stuck to what I originaly was doing. Unfortunatly some people have a one track mind when it comes to dogs.

I definitely know what you are going through - my American Bulldog, Cajun(see sig pic), was mistaken for a pitbull about 99.9% of the time which would follow with people being "so surprised a pitbull could be trained." I had a lot of fun with him in training, the two helpers we worked with had never worked an AB before so I got lots of compliments and they got an education haha.
I worked in a pet store for a while, I worked at a smaller local chain pet store and at a PetsMart(for a short while) and not only does everybody have an opinion, but at PetsMart anyone who uses or buys a prong or ecollar is a barbarian. I volunteered at a few vets offices - went through 2 to find a vet I agreed with in any way. Even as a volunteer, helping and asking for nothing in return, I got lectured and people always tried to make me "see the light" of Sudden Death.. err I mean Science Diet.. and the Halti/Gentle Leader. Bleh.
I thought THE best way to go was training our dogs at Pet Smart and using gentle leaders... Also, just remember that protection training turns good dogs into monsters! Dangerous stuff indeed (yeah right) LOL.
