can someone please tell me how to properly imprint my 12 weel old german shepherd to do both schutzhund and personal protection is this is at all possible. since this is my first german shepherd and my first attempt at this, i need as much advice as i can get.
At this age, you should be teaching the dog correct biting & re-gripping, the same way anyone would do with a SchH prospect. There is no way to tell if a 12 wk old pup is going to materialize into a PPD, until the dog is much, much older.
Also, I'd focus on SchH b/c 99% of people don't need, really want, or really understand what they're asking for when they say they want a PPD.
1. 8 weeks to 8 months just as the other poster suggested.
2. Raising a working puppy.
3. Building drive and focus with Bernard Flinks.
4. Preparing your dog for the helper.
Watching them gives you a good idea of how to bond with your pup for SchH work, build drive and develop bitework. Then, if you have not found a Schutzhund club yet please start evaluating them and get involved. I am a year into the sport, and would have made MANY mistakes if I was not working with a good helper all along the way. This is even more important if you plan on having your puppy be a family companion and house dog as well. You need someone to periodically evaluate your relationship with the pup to ensure he is not becoming inhibited. Unless you have trained in this way before, you just cannot tell.
John has a great point and those videos do offer some excellent info. You should be able to evaluate your pup nobody knows your dog like the owner.John if your ever in Alabama stop by (Central Alabama Schutzhund Club)

I agree that you should in a perfect world be able to evaluate your own pup, but for a first time handler and therefore someone new to SchH that can be very difficult. That is why I suggested getting with an experienced helper ASAP.
And if I ever get down around your parts I would be more than happy to stop by and check out your club, thanks for the invite Doug.
