Please help - any and all experience with the various surgeries would be greatly appreciated.
Dog in question, 6 - 8 months old purebred GSD, bilateral dysplasia of the worst kind, vet has never seen such horrible hips. She is sweet and loving and friendly with all, no *outward* sign of pain (and ya they are a stoic breed), in spite on non sedated manipulations for xray. She does have classic bunny hop, and other visual signs of something terribly wrong.
Any thoughts? TPO - FHO?? TPO I am told would not be an option, especially as one side has virtually no socket. Euthanasia, not my fav option of course, is being considered as well. I have been reading up on hip surgeries since 1999, I have 2 males with broken hips (one with added squashed pelvis) from being hit by cars. Before I get slammed, these injuries happened before I took these dogs in.
Xray for any who want to take a peep and offer experienced view: http://www.gsrt.net/little_puppy.jpg
Thanks.

I have a customer that had the TPO surgery on their dog.The dog was also 8 months at the time and after 6 months has had a complete recovery. Looking at your xray the dogs right side (left looking at the xray picture) has no socket. The cost of these surgeries can run up to 5,000,for a hip replacement. I know my customer paid 1800 per side. I know you do rescue work. Will you be subsidised for the operation? Maybe a vet university will take it on as a hardship case.At this point the dog is young and isn't showing any real signs of pain. Thats good it buys you time to make a decision.

Laureen,
I feel for you, we just went thru that this year with our male GSD. His hips were both bad also, we had him from 10 weeks old. At about 4-months he begin to show signs of problems, after x-rays, consulting with vets, We had the FHO surgery done, first side then 8 weeks later, the other side. He did great for awhile, then he begin to have problems in his front legs, we felt due to haveing to use them more and his size. He was large for his age. And from what I have learned the weight will effect the out come. Most say under 50 lbs is best. He was in pain and not able to work normal, so we made that very hard decision to put him down. Couldn't stand to see him in pain.

With you permission I am going to forward the link of the hip x-rays to the vet I work for. I know we sent a Saint Bernard with horrible hips to a surgeon here in town (in Alabama) and he did a newer precedure because the regular FHO and TPO weren't in the dogs best interest long term. I want to find out what this procedure is called (it has just completely left what little mind I have remaining!!) and I will send it to you in a PM when I get it...or post it here for others to read if interested.
Hope it can help some.

I am so sorry about your dog Owen, my deepest sympathies.
Milt - the vet college is a great idea - I will call them Monday, and hope they will help, I will try the local Humane Society too, we have a nice group near me. No subsidies unfortunately, I am a one man show so to speak, but I will try to hunt some down!

Is this dog in pain? I have a 14 month old GSD with the worst hips vet had ever seen. Femur heads nowhere near the sockets. The thing is, this dog is not in pain. His movements are free and easy, jumps in air, all fours off the ground. Only signs are, his back legs wobble at times, he sits a littel crooked and does not lift leg to pee. The bones are not rubbing, so he has no pain. Maybe he will later. if so then he'll have the surgery.

Hi Laureen, I'm sorry to hear about your baby. If you've read my post you know that my youngest GSD had a Bilateral FHO done 5 months ago. Today she is doing great! I could not be happier with the results, she runs like never before and is just as happy as can be. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> You can see her here just four months later running after another two GSDs:

Have you decided yet on what you are going to do?
