Hi! First off I want to say I have had many dogs in my lifetime and I've never had a problem house training any of them except this yorkie! She's a little over a year old and the crate is not working! She pees in it at night and if I leave, she'll poop and pee in it! Yeaterday for instance, I made sure to walk her so she could pee and poop before I went grocery shopping. She did. I went shopping. I came home. She pooped and peed in the crate. My boyfriend thought we should put the divider in the crate (even though we had the smallest crate available). He said she may need to just feel uncomfortable for a few days since no dog wants to lie in their own waste. Wrong. She did it this afternoon with NO problem!
I'm kind of at wit's end because I'm doing everything I can think of (picking up food and water after eating, walking immediately after eating, praising) and this dog is not getting it. The only positive way to look at this is that she's not peeing on my carpet anymore.......but she's peeing in the crate! I'm thinking maybe she has a UTI (but she only pees in the crate, mostly at night)and my boyfriend thinks she's mildly retarded or inbred.
I plan on getting some of the Leerburg DVD's on payday because we're ready to just give her away.....that's how bad it is. Any suggestions?
Oh and btw, I took some advice from somewhere in this forumw where I could use vinegar to clean her pan instead of nature's miracle.......she sniffed it and squatted.

I can't help you with your problem but can empathize and hope you get the help you need.
I have housebroken 7 other dogs using the crate and timing without any problem and all and "don't see what the big deal is"
Many years ago I got a Welsh Terrier as a young adult and had the same problem, which we did not resolve and eventually rehomed him (not the pound)

Melissa, where did you get the dog from? Is it from a pet store?
One thing you can try is disposable diapers. This way the pee will be easier to clean. ?

Melissa,
What are you feeding?
What are the stools like? (firm, soft pudding or diahrrea)
Has this dog seen a vet to be health checked so that you can rule out UTI?

We bought her off of a friend because the friend was getting a bigger dog in the home and didn't want any "friction" between the 2 dogs. She gave me the papers to the dog and it looks like her last pet visit was about 3 months ago and everything was good....just needed a flea treatment. Her stools are firm. We feed her Beneful.
I'm thinking of taking her back to the vet but the funny thing is today she's done all her business outside and I haven't done anything new or different. I guess we'll see how it goes again for the next couple days

What was the situation in her previous home? Was she house-trained there?
This can be done. There have probably been a few zillion dogs house-trained by forum members. :> So post back if the problem persists.
P.S. Not your question, I know, but you can do a lot better than Purina Beneful.

You feed your dog Beneful? On purpose? For the health of your dog, please consider feeding her something better quality.
The reason I was asking where it came from is that often, pet store dogs are raised in dirty conditions and learn that laying in their own waste is normal, and it doesn't bother them.
Sadly, small breed dogs tend to come from pet shops more frequently than large breeds. But the same thing can happen to a dog from a breeder, if the breeder didn't keep the puppy's area clean.

I would recommend a kibble off of this list if you are not interested in raw diet:
All Natural Kibble List
I think Beneful has corn as the second ingredient and it is terrible for dogs. Well, all of it is terrible but especially when any grain is in the first 6 ingredients.
Sometimes it takes dogs longer to "get it" than others, sounds like your doing great.

Good news is it's day 3 and she hasn't peed and yes when we got her crate, she went from peeing on the carpets to only peeing in the crate. Like I said, I don't know what happened because I sure didn't change anything but she hasn't peed in her crate. She did have a small spell of submissive peeing when my daughter got home from school but we quickly put her outside so hopefully that will stop down the road whenever she sees my daughter coming home.
Oh and to answer your question, I'm not sure where my friend got her but she told me the dog was crate trained which was a full out lie! The dog spent hours tactfully trying to figure out ways to get out (which only happened once!) and I told you she made some messes in there. So it's like I'm starting from scratch. Things are getting a little better
