Hello all,
My 8 month old golden just started her first heat cycle, and was literally scheduled for her spaying in a week and a half. Can she be spayed during her cycle- are there any risks/complications involved in doing so? I know dogs spayed after their first cycle have a 6-8% chance of mammary cancer and dogs spayed before have almost zero chance...so, does this statistic change at all if she is spayed during? I have just been reading up on the risks associated with allowing a dog to experience her first heat cycle, and since my golden's cycle started unexpectedly (well, not necessarily unexpectedly, rather just at an ironic time, right before she was scheduled for spaying), I am just absolutely worried and feel like a terrible dog parent. Also, what does anyone recommend as far as containing the bleeding?
Doggie diapers with human sanitary napkins inside.
I had a vet tell me that if you spay during her heat she is more likely to hemorrhage and possibly die because of the increased blood flow to the reproductive tract. The same vet charges double for an in heat spay.
This website has information on early spay/neuter and the health risks. http://www.geocities.com/truebloodpuresiamese/CatoFAQ.html#dewclaws
While it is medically possible, it is not at all advisable to spay a dog DURING a heat cycle - because of the state of the uterus at this time, the risks of complication during surgery (bleeding/hemorrhage) increase greatly. Unless absolutely necessary, it is recommended to wait well after the heat is over before spaying. Have you consulted your vet about this? I would be surprised if they agreed to do it.
No worries though! Your girl will be just fine - even better actually! - for having had one heat cycle before spaying. Mammary cancer percentages may go up slightly (by statistic - but remember - not all dogs get cancer ) but chances for incontinence go UP if spayed before at least one heat, PLUS, her mental development will benefit from the extra hormones during adolescence.
I can't give you any tips on handling the heat (I've only ever had males ) but I'm sure many people here can give you some suggestions.

We are in the middle of this joy with my lab Willow right now. My solution to bitches in heat is lock em up in the best kennel you have and wait. Pretty much she is let out to potty, train, and exercise ( I use a treadmill) and back in the kennel she goes. She never leaves the yard during a heat. I also deal with loose dogs around my property all the time like a nut. A couple of my nearby neighbors learned quickly that they'll get one courtesy phonecall from me the first time and after that they can pick up their dog at the shelter. The problem generally corrects itself that way
You can do the doggie diaper thing too if you have your dog inside.
