We did give him sardines and tuna and other fish though as treats. Im a firm believer that certain breeds are better off eating a diet including a larger amount of what they genetically were made to eat, in the case of Huskies it would be fish, reindeer, and maybe seal? Im not really sure lol. They would have had a pretty specific diet, more so than a temperate climate dog, I would think, For the many years they existed before being introduced to the west about a 100 years ago. Well of those choices fish is the easiest to come by for sure so I want to start incorporating it into his diet and also to help his skin which seems really dry for a pup he has flakes and smells doggy to me. So i am switching him over to raw slowly sooner than I planned. But those tiny bones in fish make me nervous, and Im not spinging for salmon steaks!! Do you feed fish, if so how do you do it?

Jennifer Mullen Webboard User Reg: 08-16-2007 Posts: 2365 Loc: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Offline	i feed salmon steaks (sometimes) or other fish steaks, different cuts of fish w/the bones still in, canned fish, and i'm about to take the leap into feeding whole fish. i haven't found the small bones in fish to be an issue. when i first started feeding salmon steaks, i cut the bones into little pieces, but i don't anymore and the dogs are fine. i think your dogs would be OK w/fish bones. Why is that Connie? Sea lice from Farmed Salmon? Salmon poisoning (which kills dogs) is from raw salmonids west of the Cascde range (Pacific northwest). Cooked/canned, even from there, is fine. (Farmed, though, has a whole 'nother set of problems, and it's not limited to that geo area. But salmon poisoning is more immediately deadly, although not to other species I know of -- just canids. Bears, wildcats -- no prob.)

The problem isn't the parasite, but an infection of the parasite with a rickettsial organism. Salmon feed on snails that carry the fluke that can be infected. The salmon can be fresh, or found by the dog in trash. Any part of the raw salmon can contain these flukes and bacteria, but the head and guts contain the most, and are also the parts most often encountered by the dogs near fishing areas and campgrounds. Freezing, cooking, and smoking can kill it. I have read in some sources that only cooking and hot-smoking are 100% certain. If your dog has been near such raw salmonids and may have eaten any, I'd go to the vet right away and explain. The treatment is simple, and the death rate without it is very high.

Again, it's specifically the area west of the Cascades; this would be about southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to the very northern part of California.
