would you correct the behaviour. Went to relatives for dinner tonight. My niece has 2 dogs. German Shorthaired Pointers, one 3 years, neutered and a pup 5 months, not neutered. More relatives, 2 more dogs, also male, one a beagle not neutered other older and neutered. Anyway puppy being a puppy wants to play with the other dogs. Beagle keeps trying to hump puppy, of course everybody immediately thinks that the beagle is trying to mate with the puppy (except me, I've learned a few things!) Now since when I get a pup in the spring, I want a male and want to avoid this kind of thing. Now I remember Ed saying that if you have a male, you don't let him mark every bush and tree, so I'm wondering if this falls into that area.

5 month old pups should be seperated from older dogs.

Out of curiosity, in which article does he say this?

i just watched him say that!
in his dominant dog dvd. he says you decide where and when your dog goes to the bathroom. It's part of controlling every aspect of your dog's life, plus, it limits them trying to expand their territory.
sorry, i am the loser that brought those dvd's on her cruise to watch, as ice carvings hold little interest to me.

This is not always an easy situation and I'm kind of answering a question you didn't ask. My family and I get together at my Grandparent's house in Northern Michigan many times during the summer. This means that my two GSDs are with my Aunt's shihtzu and Grandma's yorkie...big size difference, obviously, and the potential for trouble.
We work hard to maintain a good pack order and things really go smoothly. It is also understood that all humans can correct any dog if necessary. That means if my Aunt sees Kira (my dog) pestering Kody (her dog), she can correct Kira. It is also understood that I am the one who knows the most about dog behavior and the family follows my lead. We don't leave the big dogs unattended with the little ones, also.
It really works out wonderfully...all the dogs know what is expected of them and they respond accordingly. Especially with my dogs, the foundation has been laid. They know what is what, they are obedience trained, they are well socialized, they are good house dogs, etc...So taking them to a new environment doesn't change their behaviors. The ground work is there and that is the way we are successful!
So - with your own puppy - do the same...build the foundation and you will be fine.

I won't let my two dogs play with ANY other dogs, why?
Pack structure. Simpe stuff here.
Kindly tell these relatives. 2 dogs playing is fine,
3 or more dogs = a dog pack.
Even if it's for 5 minutes, you'll see the dogs trying to establish Rank with the other dogs.
best of luck

It seems you have your own pack structure in your Human family hahahaha
Good job!

Malorie: like you I think most of us are into dogs pretty heavily, and thats ok, ice sculptures aren't for everyone, unless of course they were of dogs, then I'd be interested, Ha!
How are things with your older dogs, have the video's Ed makes helped you? they sure have helped me. I am considering getting the aggressive dog one, just because I can see Cody though young thinks he is a dominant dog, he is wrong of course, I am the dominant dog in this house, Ha!

I think of all the people who own dogs in my family, I'm the only one who's actually done any research and studying about dogs. None of them have any clue about pack structure and since my family seems to consist of people who think they know everything I don't really bother to correct them. I just leave my dog at home and that way I know I don't have to worry about her. My sister was over yesterday and commented on how well behaved my dog is. She was excited to see her but no jumping up and listened to me even though she was excited.

The dvd's HAVE helped, they were life savers for my dogs.
They are already better behaved.
If i had the money, i would be buying them and giving to all my friends with dogs as presents.
