what do you all think of this, i mean, we all know it is sad, but i didn't think, personally, that a dog should have been deployed to keep a man from jumping off a bridge.
I don't work with these dogs, nor am i a cop, but it seems like, even the best trained dog would, in the force of going in to bite, knock the person forward, off the bridge. Even if the idea was to pull the man back, the force of hitting him would do the opposite just enough to send him over.

Wow, that's sad. It sounds to me that the dog was released to catch him before he could get into a position to jump. Anyhow I really feel for the handler I think I know how I might feel if I made such a fatal mistake.

Should have let him jump, he endangered others, a police officer and got his dog killed (also a police officer). Now the tax payers get to pay for him now. It is sad

This is a slow speed pursuit with a DUI that went about 45 miles. When released, the dog did his job, took the guy down. But the guy recovered and then took the dog with him over the side. The result is 180 from what it should have been. A great loss to the handler and the department and we're stuck with a POS. The only positive result is that he didn't take an officer with him.

Umm..did you even *read* the article?
And please, as you've indicated, you don't work with Police Canines. Your comment is insulting in it's lack of knowledge in what ocurs during a canine send-out on a perp.
It's really easy to play armchair quarter back after the fact, even if you have no idea what goes on in the streets.

i did read it, there is no reason to get upset. I don't work with these dogs, that is why i asked someone to help me understand this. at the rate you are going, no one should learn anything, and all the current trainers and handlers will die out because no one who doesn't already know shouldn't ask questions.
if i have no clue, then explain it to me instead of acting like a jerk.

Mallory,
You couldn't even read the article close enough to see that it clearly indicated that the perp picked jumped with dog attached to him. The dog in no way forced the guy off the bridge.
Yet you felt the need to make a statement that the dog should have been deployed differently.
So you:
a) didn't really look at the information right in front of you and
b) made a comment about something you have absolutely no experience about.
Also, where in your original post did you ask a question? You made a comment about the event, there's a *big* difference.
And I'm the jerk?

Mallory! What are you talking about???????????????? Did you read the flippin article? My five year old got it , why didn't you?
The dog was send to take the men down BEFORE HE WAS JUMPING AND ON THE GROUND!!!!!!!!!! HE TOOK THE DOG WITH HIM WHEN HE JUMPED THE DOG HAD NO CHOICE OR THE HANDLER IN THIS!!!!! FEEL FOR THE HANDLER PLEASE!
You need to apologize for your comment, next time take your time and READ the article you are posting!
Dirt bags like this guy are like Slinky's, USELESS but fun to watch flippin down a flight of stairs, I hope he gets his when he gets out of the Hospital..

sorry i missed one line in the article.
but i still wonder why a dog was deployed to prevent the jump, when is seems like the force would do the opposite. i still stand by that question, it is legitimate.
i didn't say the handler did anything wrong, actually, someone else said that, and you haven't jumped all over them.I was merely asking why, for the reason stated above.
ok, my visual.
man at edge of bridge, yes still on the ground. Dog runs at him, and makes contact. now, it SEEMS like the force of that hit would actually knock him over, even though it didn't. i am asking why that is, why it would or would not knock him over.
don't insult my intelligence, it is quite easy to miss one line in an article, i'm sure you have done it before. And i do feel for the handler, i never said or implied otherwise. I'm glad a 5 year old got it. had i not read over the line, i would have gotten it too. i didn't state the dog caused the fall, i am asking why the dog was sent out for that.
