Hello
My GSD is a female spayed 18 mo. old. She began limping a week ago on her left front leg. Took her to the vet and was diagnosed as having ununited anconeal process or elbow dysplasia? I need all the input I can get. Have researched it on the net and it seems like surgery is what is being offered. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks so much.
Patty
I had a GSD with UAP, and he had to have surgery to remove the fragment of bone that broke off. He limped the rest of his life after any type of active running. Arthritis tends to set in. Unfortunately, not a good prognosis.
My five year old Lab has something very similar. I washed him out of SAR training because of it. I opted not to do the surgery, as I was not convinced that the benefits would be substantial enough to justify the expense to me and the discomfort of surgery/recovery process to the dog. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I chose management instead.
The surgery is basically a clean up to remove any junk floating around and slow the degenerative changes. It does not fix the elbow.
I have him on G/C supplements, weight management, moderate low impact exercise (leashed walks, swimming, back yard fetch) and he tracks once per week. The vet checks his elbow for range of motion every time I take him in, and so far he hasn't lost any, and he seems as comfortable as he was prior to his diagnosis.
I realize this thread is a bit old but I thought I'd add my experience with UAP.
I have 4 yr old GSD who just had surgery on his right elbow to remove the ununited anconeal process. I almost opted for drug maintenance because of his age but we're doing SAR and I was hoping that he could continue. The vet pulled a chunk of bone out about a half inch in diameter about 2 months ago and we've started back trailing and I think I can say the surgery was a success. We're trailing much faster now and he shows no sign of lameness after consecutive days of training.
Maybe we are one of the lucky ones. Maybe I have a exceptionally skilled vet. Time will tell...especially when we start doing some distance. But I'm very optimistic.
