I have a similar issue. Not dry pads, but dry skin. Here are the facts. I have had Cody for about 2 months, he is a rescue, who is soon to be 5 months old. His diet consists of raw;
veggies, sweet potatoes, and the rotation of pork, or beef, or chiken, or turkey, and cornish game hens.
His supplements consist of:
vitamin e 400 iu
Holistic Animal care mega daily vitamin (just started this last week)
Wild Alaskam salmon oil=0.12 fl. oz daily
and a couple of times a week 1000mg vitamin c
What am I doing wrong. I know I haven't had him that long, but his little coat is beginning to be shinny but his skin is very very flaky. He does not itch much at all, rarely, maybe twice a week at the most, and he is an inside dog so I would know.
I would like to have his skin not be so flaky. what can I do?
THank you

How much does he weigh? THat would be a 30-pound-dog dose of fish oil.
I give a gram (1000 mg) of fish oil per ten pounds of dog.

Also, why the mega vitamin? You are feeding an assortment of vitamin-rich foods plus a C supplement.
Is he getting organ meat? Is he getting some of the fat on the meats?
If I added organ meat and upped the fish oil to a therapeutic dose and saw no improvement, I'd probably have a thyroid test done.

Cody weights 11 lbs. Yes he is getting organ meat. And yes he is getting fat off the meat too.
The reason I gave him the mega (1/2 capsule daily) is because I was concerned he was not getting everything he needed, his skin being so dry and his being a rescue and coming off commercial food. It consains vitamins, minerals and amino acid chelates in a base of alfalfa, watercress, parsley, rice and Lecithin.
The Salmon oil comes in a pump and suggests for dogs up to 12.5 lbs the dose I told you 0.12 fl oz.
As I am writing this I can't see back to what you said the therapeutic dose is, but I will look at it and try that. My husband and I take fish oils ourselves, and have jellcaps of 1000 mg. I could give him one of those. And if he doesn't improve I will ask that his thyroid be checked.
Thank you.

Oh. He is small. The salmon oil dose is OK. (One of your gelcaps would also be OK.) Therapeutic dose: a gram (1000 mg) per ten pounds of dog.
Just me personally -- I don't care for mega vitamins. For one thing, you are feeding a lot of Vitamin A precursor in the sweet potato (which I would eliminate, using pumpkin instead if I were trying to give extra A...... MUCH lower in sugar), and you are doubling up on C.
Then I would give him a couple more weeks to respond to his new diet; you're right that two months isn't long. ;-)

I betcha that if he still has flaking skin in a couple weeks, it will be a thyroid thing (which, BTW, is easily dealt with once it's diagnosed).
But it really doesn't sound like a diet problem to me. I'd lose that mega vitamin and the sweet potato, but not because of the skin flakiness.
