Hello! I searched quite a bit and couldn't find any information here on the site about this.
I have a 5 month old Australian Shepherd and it's my first time raising a puppy completely on my own. (plenty of dogs growing up).
Izzie is obsessed with eating poop, and it's really gross because she's a big licker and obviously I don't want her swiping a poopy tongue on my hand. Whenever I take her out she will sniff out any poop she can find, even under the snow, dig it up and immediately try to eat it. I cleaned her area around where she goes out, but when I take her for walks or for playtime out in the yard she'll find any poop she can and race to dig it up. (Even when on a leash!)
She's so dedicated that she won't even play ball or anything if she smells any. I tried to distract her with treats, but she ignores me. I don't want to scold her a lot since I've read that you shouldn't overly scold puppies.. Any advice??
She's on Nutro: Natural Choice - Small Puppy Bites. It says it has Chicken Meal, Rice, and Oatmeal formula. I give her about a cup and a half in the morning and another cup or so in the evening.
She is probably lacking something nutritionally. Read up on the raw diet. There are plenty of threads on here about it as well as very good free articles written by Cindy.
She may also have some obsessive compulsive tendencies.
You can also try a very high value treat such as freeze dried liver.
I had two GSD pups come in that ate their own poop and the diet switch stopped it.
Also, implementing a "leave-it" command for anything you do not want her to get into will help as well.
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
Hmm, I suspected it might be a diet thing but I didn't want to mess with her food if unnecessary. I didn't know that she should be on adult food now.
Sorry Cindy, I honestly did do a number of searches on the forum and nothing came up. I guess I didn't use the right strings.
Thank you for the help, everyone! I will look into different food. I'd like to stick with kibble if possible, I'm not too keen on having a lot of raw meat around the home. I'll have to see what's available in the area.
