I think I won't be shopping at Indian Valley Kennels:
"This is Zakai Ashkii Elu, the Native American Indian Dog at 4 years old. He is the offspring of Majestic View Kennels. His mother is Hakata and his father Paahuma. He is very loving and affectionate and loves to climb into bed with me and cuddle. He is a great alarm clock and will wake me when he knows it is time for me to get up by hitting me or the bed with his paw. He is my son's guardian and gets upset when he gets out of site. I have observed him staring off in the direction my son has gone for quite some time after he has left and then will periodically look and listen in that direction the whole time he is gone. He is leery of strangers but once he gets to know people he lets them give him lots of love and attention. He enjoys having his tummy rubbed and will let you do it for as long as he can get away with it. He loves the outdoors but wants to be in with the family as well." Courtesy of Indian Valley Kennels
Regardless of this, the dog is very pretty, IMO.

haha, they are beautiful, they just look like wolf hybrids.
and did you catch the part about the dog getting confused while in a crate, and thinking they are being punished.....an entire breed that has the same crate experience.....right.
is this really a breed?

The Native American Indian Dog does not do well as an apartment dog or a total housedog. They need a fenced in area where they can run and play at will and do not adapt well to a "closed crate" crate training method. If locked in a crate, they think they are being punished and don't understand what they did wrong and why they are being punished.
Yeah, I was just about to post this when I read your comment. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Mallory: I read the link and also looked under "find an American Indian Dog breeder" link. THis is what I read, it confuses me but here it goes:
In the times when the Native Indian tribes traveled the plains they were accompanied by canines of unknown lineage, but were most likely wolves. To prevent close inbreeding new blood was introduced from other tribes which accounts for the different types of dogs described and portrayed in the different books written about the Native American people, and the dogs that traveled with them . THen they say:
It is difficult to prove that there are any authentic Native Dogs being bred today ( i.e. pre 1900's), however, It is possible to re-create the type of dog that was used by Native Americans. With the assistance of a few dedicated breeders, our dream has become a reality.
Native American Indian Dogs are bred to be a family companion dog and while they tend towards a "wolfy look", these dogs are not Wolf or Coyote hybrids. I am happy to refer you to a reputable breeder of wolf and coy-dogs if you wish.
Our NAID's are registered with The Native American Indian Dog Registry,The National Kennel Club, The Native American Shepherd Registry, and the Certified Pet Registry. All pups are eligible for registration with any of these registries.
So, I do not know what is true, the original indian dogs were from wolves, but now these replicas of the American Indian DOg are not from wolf or coyotee hybreds. So, I am not sure. Never had heard of these dogs either, they are pretty, but I am not sure what standard they are to be, or their purpose. They say they were used in herding.
Has anyone heard anything about these breeders or this bred?

The Carolina Dog is a variety thought to be very similar to those encountered at Indian by early European explorers. http://www.carolinadogs.org/
It even shows a fairly close genetic link to Australian Dingos.
Doesn't look at all like that "American Indian Dog".

How about this line?
"The General Public please be aware of scam /con-artists who call themselves breeders of the Native American Indian Dog (R) when they are not . Any Individual/Breeder who is not mentioned in the list below are Not Approved breeders of the NAID and are thereby ineligible to breed the REAL Native American Indian Dog (R)"
How can this kennel claim monopoly? If they don't say you're a breeder you can't be one? Does this mean that all the "REAL" NAIDs came from their kennel? How inbred does that make this "breed"?

sounds like trouble to me, i knew it was sketchy. The dogs are pretty, but that is about it.
and is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the Native American, and Indian together.....they aren't native american dogs, and not indian dogs, they are native american indian dogs.
incase we were confusing them with the native american polish dogs, or the south australian indian dogs......
