I butchered a sheep today, and the dogs all got some of everything including guts and predigested veggie glop (the natural contents of the intestines). They went nuts over the intestines and I was very surprised how much they enjoyed the veggie glop, they even licked up glop that dropped on the ground. They won't touch veggies in any of the non-disgusting forms I have offered them. Even the new dog who isn't sure that meat is that great ate her unwashed tripe first thing and without any hesitation.
Unfortunately I got some of the glop on my hands, now I can't get the smell off. I've read what people have said about how nasty green tripe is, and I'm wondering if this smell is worse because of the "pristine" state it was in?

I really envy you guys who can just pop out to the back yard, slaughter something, and voila...dinner for the pack! Talk about fast food
I would imagine really fresh green tripe has a certain je ne sais quoi that the packaged green tripe I get does not. The beef green tripe smells like cow $#it and my dog just loves the stuff. No kisses for me after he eats it.
I still think beef heart smells worse

I once came across about 50 lbs of fresh unrendered lard.
I make soap for a living and so I was soooo excited.
I decided to clean render it myself in the kitchen, not a good idea at all. Feeling all pioneerish and hardy I separated and added water and baking soda then turned on the heat to low to get it going.
OMG the house reeked for days but the dogs were literally salivating, the drool that comes out in long ropey strings.
I cant get good green tripe here so i use the canned stuff made for dogs from time to time, it is some nasty nasty stuff.

A friend of mine butchered a buffalo last week and brought me all the whole stomach, and it was still warm and steaming in the freezing cold....
He wanted to cut it up with me so I would have help and I couldn't even get within 5 ft of it without losing my lunch...so we put it in a kiddie pool (which it filled to the top) and it is in the shed.
Froze solid and no more stink....so this weekend is the cutting up party.....
Rock has been sneaking in there and eating chunks of it....which explains why he was not eating his chicken with the "gusto" he usually has. Fixed his little homemade entrance.
OH, what we do for our dogs.......

Carol
If you think you're going to pass out during the "party" make sure you put your knife down first and don't fall in the veggie glop.

Fresh too
Plus it saves you from having to thaw stuff, wash out the containers used to thaw, clean blood off the floor if anything leaks, wash the scissors used to cut up the bags, gloves for digging through the bags, cleaning the hammer (for breaking up the stuff that's frozen together) etc.
When feeding rabbits as RAW, all it takes is a mallet!
I would imagine really fresh green tripe has a certain je ne sais quoi that the packaged green tripe I get does not. The beef green tripe smells like cow $#it
Fresh tripe smells so much worse than cow crap. It's hard to even describe the extent of the stench. It is unbelievably offensive.
I still think beef heart smells worse
Sarah you're too strange. For god's sakes, what's so bad about beef heart?? It barely has a smell to it (a little gamier than regular beef meat, but not by much).
I cut up raw beef hearts to use for marker training at home and I find the meat to be quite lovely. I'm always tempted to munch on it myself, except that I consider it "dog food"
You gotta explain your aversion to beef heart.
Kidneys on the other hand... oh man, I can't stand the smell. Livers-fine; lungs-fine; hearts-lovely; tripe-offensive; muscle meats-lovely; heads-fun etc.
But kidneys... that's the one thing that never fails to make me nauseous. While they don't smell nearly as strongly as tripe, it makes me feel so much worse & I refuse to handle them.
As for getting the smell off your hands, well - if you're unfortunate enough to have your skin come into direct contact with fresh tripe, try the dish washing liquid soaps instead of the hand washing soaps. They easily cut through the smell after even a quick wash.
You can wash your hands all day long using normal hand-washing soap and you'll still be stuck with that faint tripe aroma on your skin...
Why do we even bother with tripe anyway?
Do any of us really love our dogs THAT much????

I find the fresh tripe less smelly than the canned tripe. The stuff I get comes frozen in nice serving size blocks. I can't imagine the size of a full cow stomach..I'd have to invite a bunch of dogs over! I don't know if this method would work for the tripe smell but it works for getting onion and garlic smell of your hands. Just wet your hands and rub them on your kitchen sink if it's aluminum.

Hey, to each his own olfactory hell

If and when you finally "bite the bullet", so to speak, I want pictures.

Yuko, I could wear a kidney and hang livers on a chain around my neck. I don't find the smell of cow crap all that offensive so tripe doesn't make me sick. But beef heart? I dunno...maybe I'm getting bad heart but the stuff just reeks...way beyond gamey and well into down-on-my-knees-nauseous territory. After a few memorable attempts to dissect it with a clothes pin on my nose I refuse to even cut it up now and just fling the whole thing out the back door.
And the very thought of "munching" on it has really killed my appetite. Thanks mucho, Yuko!

It is great in stuffing and also in a stroganoff.
Dogs get the deer and beef hearts, but the buffalo heart I do not share.
