since when i googled all i got was a bunch of hemmorhoid sites....sigh.
(though that reminds me, today at work we got a letter from a lady who has to get a response by friday because she is, and i quote, 'hemmorrhaging from her rectum'. AMAZING)
luc has developed a lump just behind one of his front armpits. i'm hoping this could be caused by his harness (the fleece covers fell off the underneath part and i haven't put them back on).
does rubbing cause this? i know animals get sub-q lumps and they're nothing, but i also really hate 'em, they make me nervous anyways.

A needle biopsy will answer your fears. Is there a way to reposition the harness or use a different one, then switch back and forth if that was the cause?
I don't know anything about the work or the equipment, obviously..... so I'm sorry if it's a stupid question ;-)

i'm putting that off b/c i kinda don't want to know. i should get that done though.
the harness doesn't really reposition. it's his hiking harness, i haven't found anything nearly as good in the harness line (it's got a handle, etc) though i may just keep it in my backpack in case of emergency and hike him on a collar. that's what i've been doing for teagan (purely aesthetic, i don't think the harness looks good with her long hair).

I would get the needle biopsy done asap. If you're lucky it's just a harness blister of sorts. If you're sorta lucky you found it before it spreads to something you can't replace. We had a elderly spaniel who we'd routinely take the bumps out of at the vet and we had her until the ripe ol age of 18.

vets in the past have always told me just to watch the lumps (i had a rabbit w/a benign lump) and as long as they don't grow or change shape, not to worry about it....i take it that's bad advice? i would assume if the lump was cancerous it would change shape, but i don't know if it would take longer to do that and internal damage could be caused.
of course, i still have a heart attack when i found the lump, the location makes me think it's from the harness but perhaps it's best to go get the biopsy done just to be sure. like i said, i'm just used to monitoring the lump.

No.... because that tells me that you talked to the vet and the vet said that it was - so far - benign.
Did you talk to the vet about the dog's lump? If the vet said that s/he could tell it was benign, that would be far different from you asking on the internet about an un-assessed lump and people saying to go to the vet for an aspiration/biopsy.
When you get there, if the vet says it's unnecessary, then great.

that makes sense. the vet at the time was so 'don't worry about it, it's a lump, just watch the shape' i think i took it as an across the board thing.
i just found the lump, so i haven't had it looked at by a vet.
(okay, i admit, i was hoping everyone would say 'it's from the rubbing, that happens all the time' and then i could sort of stick my head in the sand and feel that there was no way it could be cancer. which is a superb approach, i know )
edit: i've called to make an appointment, b/c you guys are right. the possibility of cancer terrifies me into stupidity.

Me too. It's hard to keep reminding ourselves that cancer is not the inevitable death sentence it was even 20 years ago, never mind 50. And lumps that are removed early (if they are malignant, and remember that most are not) are a lot better than lumps that are not.
Think about the weight off when you leave the vet's office after being told that it's a benign cyst.

honestly, i'd rather one of the animals have any medical condition over cancer. doesn't help my dad died of cancer when i was 11, i logically know it's not a death sentence but emotionally still feel that way, and especially as i doubt that dog cancer treatments are as advanced as human.
though, you're right, it's unlikely to actually be cancer. we're going to the vet saturday morning though, i'm all nervous now, but i'm sure it will be fine. and then i will be able to relax.

I would go to the vet and get a needle aspiration. My old Lab Mokie would get lumps all the time and they turned out to be just fat deposits... she was a little chunky butt ... or fluid cysts.
My heart would stop each time I found one though. The old Lady lived to 14 and I do not regret a single trip to the vet.
Good luck and kisses to Luc
