This afternoon while I was at work, our two dogs got out our gate (hubby was repairing it - thought it was secure, etc. etc.). They both took off down the street. Neither one has EVER been off leash other than in our back yard or in the house.
Hubby yelled "Roxie, come!" She turned and ran back to him and crouched down at his feet. He put her in the house in crate. Then by this time Nickie was half way down the block following the ice cream truck. He yelled even louder "Nickie, come!!!" Nickie turned and ran right back to him and sat! Unbelieveable! I have never tried to work on any kind of recall (except in the house) because I didn't have the confidence to think it would work (especially on Nickie).
Anyway, thought I would brag a little but still think that we were really really lucky that they came back.

Let me be the first to say congrats! Your diligence has paid off...
I have been avoiding the recall w/ Chula because I don't want to screw it up. She too is never off leash or on the 20' drag line. You've given me the inspiration to get started!

Lynn,
Actually I have never tried to teach them the recall (except in our small house which I don't think really counts). Maybe it was his very stern very loud tone of voice . . . ? Naturally, he knew not to scold them when they did come - just quickly took them in the house and into their crates.

Naturally, he knew not to scold them when they did come -
This is huge, and this is where MANY people screw up.
So I say CONGRATULATIONS that he knew not to call and then correct when they came!

A safe start is that when she is in the house and she knows that good things are in the offing (supper is being prepared, for example), you call her.
Associating the recall with excellent things is such a great foundation.....
And if you don't call her for bad stuff in the early phases, such as medicine or ending a game or anything she doesn't like, then that will help too to keep the recall a very positive thing in her mind.

Connie, thanks. I am also going to use an alternative word, since my husband and son have used the word 'come' when she's not in a position to be corrected if she does not comply...

Another thought on the recall . . .
I know that having high-value treats available when training the recall are the usual practice. What about a particular noise? What I have in mind is the squeaker on a dog toy. After Nickie chewed up his last two fluffy dog toys (when he was still a lot younger), I confiscated the plastic squeaker and put it away. The other day I decided to see what he would do if I squeaked it where he couldn't see it. He was in the other room and came zooming over to me about 50 miles an hour! I also had treats in my hand and gave him a treat plus praise but did not let him see the source of the noise.
Any thoughts on using this noise to teach the recall?

Good stuff! I hope your husband had a party with them and praised the crap out of them when they came! I had a similar experience with my female when she was very young at my Schutzhund club. I was "on deck" with her and waiting for the person currently working with the helper to finish and I was getting my long line on her and ready to go. I thought the line was hooked on her agitation collar, but somehow it was not and she jumped down from the truck and started to run onto the field! This was before all of the real formal recall work I did, up to that point it was just "come" in the house and yard. I gave her a come and she stopped in her tracks and came back to me! I was very lucky and very proud at the same time and I basically rolled around on the concrete with her after she came back to show her how happy with her I was.

Hi John,
I finally asked my husband the details of the recall of our two dogs who got loose from our yard. He didn't exactly "have a party" but he said that when they came to him he kissed them on the face and gave them a big hug. He was so distraught from the incident that after he put them up in their crates, he had to take a Xanax to calm down!
He and I will definitely do some work on the recall with treats, etc. Like I said before, we just got lucky this time.

Hugs and kisses are kindof likea party!
THanks for posting this story Diane. It shows, that your work with your dogs is paying off...
TOtally agree on continued work in this area. The COME command under distractions, IMO, is an ongoing life task...can anyone ever say their dog is 100% at anything? Sounds like youre doing great!
