This is actually about our stupid cat, She is tiny, about 4 lbs full grown, and she picks fights with something that keeps getting her
is there somewhere you can order basic antibiotics for animals like amoxicillan or eurythromiacin?
She was a stray and is still half wild, she only comes inside to eat most of the time, or if its very cold. God forbid you should try to touch her, she goes all stiff and tense
Well tonight she came inside and was rubbing all over my husband which is bizarre and then he realized she has another bite wound.
Her movements are fine, and its not sore to the touch anywhere else like it did any damage. She let me put a warm sea salt water compress on it to help draw out nasties and then I used the hurt free bandaid cleaner to disenfect it. But its a deep bite
I really dont want to pay another $100 for the vet to say yep she needs antibiotics and hand me a bill. But i do want to make sure this one doesnt abcess and stick around for months like the last one, that we just got totally healed about 2 weeks ago

For wounds like that injectable penicillin is what I use. I get TwinPen or Generic Pen BP-48 one shot is good for two days.
http://www.AtoZvetsupply.com has it.

I did a search and went to a couple web sites. Most said "perscription required" but on the 1-800-petmeds siti I got all the way up to the checkout with an order of Cephalexin 250mg Caps and it hasn't asked me for one yet. I'm not going to input my info for obvious reasons.
I searched for "antibiotics for pets".
You might want to look.

I just re-read my post and it sounds awful to me.
If i could have antibiotics on hand i could give her some right away to stop the infection from taking hold.
If it abcesses or gets infected I would of course take her in.
But truly this is something that I could manage at home if I had the medication to do it.
Keeping her indoors is not a viable option, we tried it for several weeks and she was miserable. She literally sat by the door for days and days and cried or hid under the bed and hissed when we came near her.

The pet meds site required me to fax or have the vet call in a script when i finished the check out to complete the order.
The regular vet wont call anything in or let me come pick it up without seeing her.
The new vet is too new to try that with yet, and has never actually seen the cat so i know she wouldnt go for it.
I am not spending an hour with her in the car to go the out of town holistic vet once so that she will call stuff in for me.

I have never done the injectibles with her so I would have to figure out dosage. But that looks like the way to go.

Do you have a farm supply near you? You can usually buy different med there that they use for thier livestock, all without an RX I believe. You might try calling some?

I think I will call around tomorow and see if I can find some.
Ideally id like to find the powder that i can reconstitute as needed and give orally.
trying to pill a cat is interesting to say the least, and I dont know about giving her a shot, theres nothing to her, and she will squirm....but im sure my exMil who is a nurse would do it for me.

The dose is 2 mL per 150 lb body weight, which would be: 1 mL per 75 lb, 1/10th mL per 7.5 lb. If you use an insulin syringe you can get the dose right for your 4 lb cat. You will need to use a 22 gauge needle instead of the dinky one that comes on it because the Pen is too thick for the dinky needle. Any pharmacy should have insulin syringes and I know farm stores have needles. If you tent the skin on the cat and rub it to release endorphins she may not notice when you jab her, HA, fat chance. ROLFLMA. I'd rather medicate a dog than a cat any day.
Or... you can use Vibactra plus from http://www.AmberTech.com that stuff is a great antibiotic. It is a liquid oral med.

The trick would be
A. letting me close enough to grab her when my husband is home
to help corral her
B. Hold her with said skin tented in one hand, a sharp object
in the other hand, and jabbing said needle into the proper
recipient when one of them is floppping around like a dying
fish with incredibly sharp claws and teeth
She let me put a warm compress on it again, and then I washed it with surgical that is used to clean peircings with clorohexadine in it, I figured it would be good for a puncture on a cat too, and I knew it didnt sting.
(I knew there was a good reason I would one day be able to give my dad for piercing my nose on my 28th birthday...one besides i felt old lol!!)
Im a little worried the pup might have gotten her, I really dont think he did but it still worries me as I caught him with the much bigger males neck in his mouth earlier when I was in the garage and not watching for about 2 minutes..I thought the kitties were all inside so I let him loose to play out back.
I put the fear of god into him for it, I had gone through the No, and physically restraining him and letting him watch them eat etc and nothing was working. But he must accept them as part of the pack and above him in the pack while young, or he will kill them when he is older.
He has been showing deference to the cats all night since, and has also resumed listening to me which had not been happening like it needed to for the last week or so.
But she was in the room with him and when he came up to sniff (on leash) she didnt freak..and I would think she would if he had been the one to get her.

the one thing too if you do end up getting a prescription from the vet, check what the dispensing fees are vet vs. human pharmacy.
(also, i'd ask for a scrip that will cover a long period of time so you can have a good stock on hand)
Teagan!
