Ive read in a few books that applying mild stress to young pups actually causes their brains to develop better. They can become I quote "...supper dogs..." Im talking mild stress, so I dont want to be called cruel.
Slight drops for short periods in air temp, short periods of loudish noise, giving the pup gentle wizzies, removal from the litter for a couple of minutes, bright lights. Apparently it can start quite early in life. It is something to do with serotonin levels in the brain and all that stuff. Im quoting this from 'Training Dogs for protection Work' Mandlik,F. and Gangloff,M. J.A Allen, London, 1999. p.p.41-43 ISBN 0.85131.736.7 Maybe some of the more experienced commentators could address this issue.
Mmm, I've come across that in quite a few books and think it stems from some research done by Dr. Michael W. Fox on puppies quite a few years back.
I've forgotten the book he first published his research in, but it may be this one:
'Integrative development of brain and behavior in the dog' It's out of print now and Amazon isn't very useful for more detailed information, but it should be findable.
The best book I have read on your question is GENETICS & THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF DOGS by Scott & Fuller. It's an older book but it's a classic covering just about everything developmental in a dog including pre-natal factors. You can order it thru dogwise.com if you are interested. IMO fiddling with "stressors" at too early an age can be a two-edged sword. Unless you know exactly what you are doing and can gauge exactly how far to apply stress without going over the edge into negative territory, I wouldn't fiddle with it. but that's JMO. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
