kind of an odd question-but do you all take your dogs collars off when they come inside? What about on small puppies?
i don't, in fact-even my indoor cats wear collars and tags full time-but i have friends that do-because of the jingling i guess-but what if your dog bolts out the door?

Grace wears hers all the time and when we leave, Kira goes in her crate and her collar comes off. I have the type of tag that slips over the collar and doesn't jingle.
We have a lot of people come and go, plus I like to have something to grab on to if necessary...

I take my dog's collar off periodically - she has a flat leather buckle collar but I don't like that it wears on her coat if she wears it 24/7 - so she gets breaks. Do you see any wear on the dog's coat under the collar?
I don't worry about bolting because she is microchipped, and trained to platz (down) whenenver someone touches the doorhandle. Then she can't walk thru it until I go first and INVITE her. Same with car doors - not much pisses me off more than to have her shove past me thru a car door no COME until I SAY SO.

ha, we are not so advanced with our down-that door opens-they are gone. Granted-they come right back, it's more of a "woohoo open door, oh wait-you are still inside", but we are getting better.
I haven't noticed any wear from collars on the dogs-but i have on the cats, but only 2 of them, and that is because one cat has had the same collar for 4 years-and the other has long hair, and he has a bald ring from his collar.
but the dogs don't have any kind of hair loss-though maya's fur on the underside of her neck is stained grey. I can't get it off no matter what.
The only thing i can think of to cause that is wearing her prong in the water all the time.

I leave collars on all the time on my two escape artists (actually they all have multiple collars so I change them a couple of times a week Lady has never had any interest in anything except hanging out with me and since I can control her better by voice than leash, i have hers off most of the time; she has thick hair and leaves a crease anyway...

Years ago I stopped leaving collars on my older, trained dogs for several reasons: my dogs are always microchipped, they know better than to bolt for the door, the collars wear down their coats, the noise of the jingling tags drives me crazy, and the dogs are always in and out of crates (I NEVER crate a dog with a collar on). I've also had a couple of nasty scenes where two of the dogs were playing and one of them got their jaw caught in the collar of the other and created a ruckus.
You haven't lived until you've had to cut a fur-saver off with bolt cutters in the midst of a two-dog melee
For my young fellows, it's a different story. When they aren't training, they always have a snap-buckle collar on (quick on/off in emergency) with one ID tag. That way I can grab them when I need to, tether them, etc. Even the young dogs are naked at night and in crates though. I had a dog almost die getting hung by his collar in a crate...made me a little paranoid.

Just to chime in. We don't leave the collars on our dogs in the house. In and out of crates would make it harder to put on and take off for multiple dogs.

Mallory: We take our dog collar off of Bindi when she goes to bed (in her crate). Before she goes to bed, I remove her collar and rub and brush her neck, she loves it. Then she goes to bed, and in the morning gets it right back on again. I haven't had my dogs that long and do not feel confident enough to leave their collars off.(identification) Cody= I leave his flat color on, because sometimes first thing in the morning it is very hard to get him to stand still and hold it( having to go potty) and put the leash on before he goes out, and if I wait too long, sometimes he can't hold it. He is just a puppy. So, at our house we leave their collars on all day, night bindi gets hers off and a good rub down and brush before bed.
How are the puppies doing? How are they doing in their crates?
God bless you

I'm with Kristel nothing worse than a dog freaking out cause his jaw is stuck in the others collars.
My dogs do all wear their collars in the house. Everyone has a leather one with name plates. I never leave a choke or pinch on, made that mistake left my dog in crate with pimch when he layed up against cage the pinch prong got hung up on crate. He didn't seen to care but I can imagine it might freak out some dogs.

When my dog was a pup he wore a flat leather collar all the time. Now at 18 months he wears an ecollar and/or a prong only when we are outside. He's naked inside
