Went to the tack store today to get dog food and asked for Panacure for worming the d.o.g.'s (was that the name of it?) " Anyhow, they didn't carry it but they recommended "D-Worm 120 active ingredients Pyrantel Pamoate liquid wormer for dogs and puppies??? Is this stuff okay or am I gonna brain damage my dogs?
We don't use chemical wormers on our dogs or puppies. We instead use diatomaceous earth. Easy to use and no worries about chemicals/toxins being introduced to our dogs. The key is to use it long enough--4 weeks minimum. http://www.leerburg.com/56.htm
Pyrantel is strongid, not the same as panacur. Pyrantel is a good wormer for hook and roundworms, but what you use depends on what type of worms you have. I know panacur for horses is over the counter but not sure if it is for dogs.
I just don't trust the tack store wormers can't you ask your vet for something? What is your purpose of wanting to deworm. Is your dog on heartworm preventative because most of those control other types of worms as well.
Panacur is fenbendazol which I have used to worm puppies and dogs (double dose for three days will clear Giardia-I got that advice from Whole Dog Journal), pyrantel is very safe and I use it regularly on puppies and dogs.
I have used piperazine to worm poultry and pigs, I haven't used it on my dogs.
Ivomec and praziquantel/Droncit is another wormer I use (don't use the Ivomec orally with Collies, it can kill them).
As long as you follow the labeled dosages any of those wormers are pretty safe.
