hello all,
i have a female chocolate lab that will be 8 weeks old tomorrow (thursday, 1/31), and when we play with her, she nips (OF COURSE, right?!). but, it seems like if i try to do anything about it, she just gets worse...actually tries harder to nip and even growls a little bit. lexie is just a family pet...i'm not a trainer or anything...and we don't play tug games with her...i'm nervous about agression, etc., so i'm pretty careful about things like that. anyway, when she bites/nips, i say 'ouch'...also, the first 4 or so days of us having her, i would kind of shake her scruff a little bit when i said it (heard that from someone...don't know if i should've or not)...that just seemed to make her more upset and agressive. so, since anytime i try to say or do anything, it seems to get worse, how do you think i should handle it? what am i doing wrong? i'm just new at this puppy thing, and i want to do whatever i can to make sure i don't mess up this little girl.
thanks in advance for your advice!

One thing a vet told me to do when I had a puppy was to actually yelp like another puppy would. It worked, even though I felt like an idiot. It was a temporary solution but another option you can try.
I would suggest using the search function because I know there have been many a thread on this topic. That would be your best bet.
Good luck and post a picture sometime. Nothing like a cute little pup!

Your welcome. I have learned to use the search function before I add a new post. Most times there have already been discussions. Just an FYI
By the way, my pup eventually learned not to bite and it just took time. Keep a lot of band-aids and chew toys handy!

A good place to start. However be very careful about asking for dog training tips at a Vet clinic. I happen to be in that business myself, and the vast majority of people who work there know very little, if anything about dog training. Sure they will probably claim they do (and genuinely beleive it) but take it with a grain of salt. Everyone and their grandma has an opinion about trainging dogs. Leerburg.com is one of the best places to start! Also instead of a correction find a toy he likes and redirect to that, praising him when he takes it. Most of all be patient. Most dogs will grow out of it anyway.

Redirect with with the toys when she starts biting put a toy in her mouth
The yelping like a puppy works well to.
That is what a litter mate does so they learn how hard to bite and not to bite.
And like everyone else said keep band aides haddy
My puppy is four months and is still a little mouthy but when there teething thats what happen.
Get a kong also thats helps a lot

Rolled up handtowels work well also to redirect the biting. Also you can wet them and freeze them to give to her when she begins teething. They make a good pacifier!
The other thing you could try is to say 'ouch!' and walk away from her after she bites too hard. It's easiest to do if she's in a gated area where she can't follow you when you leave.
Leave for a minute or two and then come back; eventually she may get the idea that if she bites too hard the fun and games are over for the time being.
PS just a note that w/ some pups, yelping when they bite you just ramps up their prey drive and causes them to bite harder! If that's the case w/ your pup, redirect to a towel or toy and forget about the 'ouch!'...
PSS, What a cute puppy!

I can give testimony to the fact that some pups get amped and more bitey with yelping etc. Everything we did made him bite harder - I even got some spray similar to bitter apple and he quite enjoyed licking it off my hands.
Anyway, redirecting works a little bit with Max. Though he tends to wait until we aren't on guard anymore and then surprises us with a full mouth bite.
Lately when doing obedience work and giving him treats I've started to say "gentle" as I give them to him. He was starting to scratch up my fingers with his teeth when taking the treat.
I do have a point somewhere here, I promise. So since I've been saying "gentle" he's been using his lips to get the treat instead of his teeth and not scratching my fingers anymore.
I'm not sure how it worked, and it may not cross over to biting - I haven't tried that yet, I will tonight though. But it's worth a try isn't it? If nothing else works, maybe something as silly as saying "gentle" and expecting it might just be the thing that does work.
