Hi all,
A friend of mine's GSD has just been diagnosed with cancer. She is looking to makes some changes to her diet and add supplements, which I would love some advice on. She is not looking to go raw, but is considering a home-cooked diet or grain free kibble. As far as supplements go, she is going to be adding fish oil/vitamin E, but is looking for others.
Any advice/good websites/etc. would be appreciated...Razzy is 10 1/2 and has had numerous health problems, including spondylosis. The decision reached is to let her live out her days, making her as comfortable as possible.
Thanks in advance...
Melissa

I have a couple of books and some saved web materials.... but it would help to know what kind of cancer, and whether it's metastatic, etc.
Also, is the digestion good, and appetite unaffected so far?

Hi Melissa. Sorry to hear about your friends dog. Man do I know that feeling too well. When my Dobe was diagnosed her oncologist recommeded either the hill's pescription diet for cancer, N/D I think but could be wrong or Innova Evo, Along with omega-3 fatty acid supplements. You want low/no carbs. Carbs tend to feed the cancer cells but some types of fats can slow down the growth of the cancer cells.

So sorry about your friend's dog; cancer is really horrid. I made the same choice when my Greyhound was diagnosed with bone-cancer: to keep him comfortable as long as possible. So far, it's been almost a year since his diagnosis, and a happy, pain-free and uneventful one at that. I feed him Evo with fish-oil and vitamin-E, and an herb called Artimisinine. Your friend may want to do her own research on this herb, but it is my understanding that not only does it help with pain, but it helps to slow down the growth of tumors. It's still considered an experimental treatment, but it can't hurt and might even help. It's felt miraculous that my dog has lived (and happily at that) this long, considering I was told he may only have a few weeks to a couple of months left at the most. I can't say for sure why I've been so lucky, but maybe the herb helped?
Best wishes for a long and happy life in any case

Whenever I see the word "cancer" in a post, my heart breaks a little for the dog's owner. It's tough to look at your dog every day and know how limited their time is. The only thing that helps is knowing that you've given your dog a great life, and a dignified passage to the next realm when it's over.
I've also found it quite helpful to have a goofy young dog who's antics take the sting out of EVERYTHING .

Connie - it's mammary cancer. They suspect it has spread to her abdomen. Her behavior/appetite/digestion are currently fine, but the mammary tumor grew quickly in size.
Thanks to all of you for your well-wishes...I will pass them on to her...
