What is the point of line breeding. I dont mean to sound like a smart alec but what does it do? Does it intensify the traits of the dog or does it bring out the traits of the dog that is in both pedegrees. Someone help me out.
1. Bring a dog/bitch "closer" in the pedigree. By that, I mean that the effect of the genes on a pup of a dog that is BOTH of the pup's grandfathers is similar to the dad's contribution. Each grandfather contributes 1/4 of the genes available to the pup. Therefore, if he is BOTH grandfathers, he contributes 1/2 of the pup's genes, same as the father. So if you want to have the genes of a certain dog, linebreeding on that dog increases the % of genes that THAT dog gives to the pup.
2. Linebreeding also narrows the gene pool, making the pup "prepotent", meaning that he/she will produce offspring that are very similar in type. "What you see is what you get" because there are less likely to be hidden recessives in a line-bred dog. So, if you are wanting to produce a consistent type, linebreeding decreases the variability w/in the litter.
3. Bring out recessives so you can breed for them or breed them out of a line. Recessives express themselves when both parents carry them AND pass the recessive on to their pup. So, with linebreeding you are more likely to see any recessives in that line. You can then fix this trait in your line, or remove the dogs that express that trait from your breeding program, thus removing the dogs that carry the recessives. And if ANY pup in a litter expresses that trait, you KNOW that both parents carry that trait. So you have info about the dog's genes that will help in future breeding decisions.
There are probably MORE reasons, but I think these are the most important. I am sure others will add to this list. Hope that helps!
You can see a listing of some good reference books on breeding on my website, just select "Resources" and browse thru the book section. http://firestormkennels.com
