My black czechoslovakian shepherd, 8 weeks old, is doing very well with all of his training but my fiance wants to play with him or wrestle & the puppy does ok with him as far as he can distinguish between me & him & not do it with me but is it not going to work later on when hes an adult & will it make his training more dificult or non existant? And is it ok to be the dogs friend as far as wrestling & play biting when hes being trained for protection? I work with the state police on training their drug & guard dogs & they of course have their dogs with them 24/7 & Ive seen them play & even take their dogs duck hunting so I know it can be done to have a working relationship & a personal one but is it going to work for me? Ed Frawley: looked for behavioral problems topic area & couldnt find it so hope this will be ok to post here? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I'm not quite sure I understand your question. I'll just say that I don't think your fiance should wrestle with your puppy. I don't think wrestling is appropriate play, because it sends the wrong signals, especially if you're also trying to deal with play-biting! There are many more appropriate ways to play with a pup, no matter what kind of training you plan on doing in the future.
You did not say what your ambitions are with your puppy so I will assume some type of protection work since this is what the board is mostly about. A puppy is a sponge. It learns from all it’s experiences no matter how miner. You main job as it’s leader is to build your puppy to be a picture of confidence. You do this by socializing to many different environments and people. During this imprinting stage it is your job that all these experiences are positive. Overpowering a puppy with rough housing is very counterproductive to his development. Whether from humans or by other animals.
I have already made this mistake, I used to Wrestle with my puppy who is now 3 months old and I am having a hard time getting him to stop wrestling with me, as now he views me as a prey object. He also would rather bite my hands then his rag/ball etc... it is going to take some time to un-do the stupid mistake I made...

VINCE P. SAID IT WELL. I HAVE MADE THIS MISTAKE. I CAN BE A BIT OF A BONEHEAD AT TIMES AND I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY EXPERIENCE THAT ENGAGING IN THIS WRESTLING CAN BE FUN, HOWEVER, ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. GOING TO FAR WITH IT CAN ALSO HAPPEN IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE AND THE DAMAGE IS IRREPARABLE. MY THOUGHT IS TO STAY AWAY FROM IT AND IF YOUR FIANCE WISHES TO PHYSICAL WITH THE PUPPY, WHY NOT ENGAGE IN A BEHAVIOR THAQT WILL ADVANCE THE PUPPY'S TRAINIG.... GET THE TOWEL OR BURLAP OUT AND HAVE PRODUCTIVE FUN.(REFER TO LEERBURGS PUPPY BITE TRAINING, I HAVE.. IT IS UNPARALLELED)
