My female is 48 hrs post delivery. She acts fine but she smells like old menstral flow blood. I can smell it 10 feet away. She has some normal looking postnatal discharge. Rectal temp 102.8
Make sure you are getting her out often. Her temp is *slightly* elevated, so I would make sure she is drinking enough, get her outside and moving. (Not just out to pee, take her for a walk.)
Keep taking her temp and call your vet if you really feel something is off.
OK, thanks. Yes, the question is, should I be able to smell her old bloody period smell? She is a collie, so she has long hair. I just did not think I would be smelling that old blood smell. I will get her out for more walks. She is just going out to pee then right back to her babies.
I would be taking her temp twice a day, if it stays elevated she needs a vet. if she has any retained placentas she could be developing an infection. Deanna is right about the walks, this helps pass anything retained in the uterus. There sometimes is a bloody discharge but if you are smelling something from 10 feet away that makes me suspicious.
If our breeding females run a temp of 102.8 to 103 they go on Baytril... a uterine infection is nothing to mess around with. you can lose the bitch and the puppies.
I would probably get her to a vet if you have any doubt, better safe than sorry. Everything may be normal but in this case I would err on the side of caution.
Have you had litters before and this is the first time you smelled it? Or is this your first experience.
I have been through one litter and my dog smelled like blood for at least a week, if not more, after she had her babies (I have a very sensitive nose). WHen she gave birth she got some fluids on her legs and tail, so I think that's why. My vet said NOT to bath her as her cervix would still be open and it could lead to infection. So yep, she stunk. She has short fur (boxer/hound mix). My dog's temp was not as high as your dog's (it was around 101.8) though.
And she peed bloody stuff for a while too, which I was told is normal.
In my inexperienced opinion, to answer your question: the smell is normal, the higher temp might not be; I agree with Cindy to call the vet.
Angela,
Molly smells much better today- day four. This is my first litter and did not know what to expect. I did call the vet and he said temp was ok as long as she acted ok and was eating, and she was. Just need more input from others. Thanks for responding.
