Yeah, my dvds came in! I was just wondering what's the best order to watch them in. I received "Establishing Pack Structure with Your Family Pet," "Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months," and "Dog Obedience." So which one do I watch first?

Personally, I'd watch the Puppy one first. I've watched that one, the Basic Obedience one, and part of the Pack Structure one. I'd suggest: Puppy one first, Pack Structure 2nd, and Basic Obed. 3rd, but that's just my opinion. If you just pop each one in your DVD player, you'll see the "outline" or whatever you want to call it of what the DVD will cover. That may help you decide. Have fun - I learned a ton from all of them (I'm gonna finish the Pack Structure one this w/e, hopefully).

I LOVED 8 weeks to 8 months. JUST GREAT. I wasn't as crazy about the pack structure dvd and I am half way through the basic obedience which I also love.

Norman
Very impressive. Thanks for sharing. Do you use extra yummy treats? I thought my boy had focus. Hah! We need work.
I definately do think puppy ground work is important. I guess PERSONALLY the 8 weeks to 8 months helped me more than the pack structure DVD.

Norman, if you're going to be offering up your own video's on a training thread, it opens up your training to comments, just to let you know - and the fact that you demostrate extremely bad training "habit's" like when you tell your dog to 'fuss" and it just about goes into position.....and then *you* step back into the dog to finish......bad, bad, bad!! )
Sorry, many beginners here won't catch the multiple handler errors presented on many peoples personal training videos, and then when those errors are pointed out, the posters often get pissy about it.
A lose-lose case, usually.

Of course I won't get "pissy" about anyones comments regarding my training and the *results of same* as I am also here to learn. For the record I am making an effort to shape a behavior. Fuss to the dog at this point means nothing. What I want to him learn is fuss means look up and focus in position so when I move he must follow and follow in the proper position without jerking him into that position. Stepping back was an error and thank you for pointing that out. That said, what was your opinion about the end result given all of my handler errors (g). Norman

Hi Norman,
I watched all 3 of Dap's videos, and I think the work you are doing is very similar to how I am working with my young Malinois, Rush. (I haven't watched any of the Boerboel videos yet)
I love the pup's focus and joy to work with you, you've done a nice job creating a good relationship with your puppy.
in the first video, what are you using for a food reward, it looks like a whole hot dog or slim jim or something like that?
I think video is a great training tool for US as handlers, because we can see our errors and hopefully learn from them. I know that I am typically mortified when I see myself on video, because it's really hard to see what the whole picture is and then when I do watch it... I am embarrassed. It takes a thick skin to post videos on the internet, and your open minded response in this thread shows a real interest in learning.
I think you'll do great with Dap, and I am interested in seeing more as he grows up.
Do you train with a specific trainer or club?

Cindy I am glad you enjoyed. Understand these are my training videos and for the most part unedited. I have no problems with any negative comments because as I replied earlier I am here to also learn. The food I was using was jumbo smoked sausages bought Walmart or at any super market. I cut them length wise in-half and then cut those strips in-half again creating long strips that can be fed to the dog so you don't have to keep reaching in your pocket causing the dog to lose position. You accomplish that by placing the strips in the V at the your thumb and palm and move your thumb causing the strip to move down. This position also give the dog a flat surface to bite against so it doesn't bite your fingers, a problem with dogs with much food drive.
I am not a member of a club now but use to be for 30 years. I trained 5 dogs of three different breeds to working schutzhund titles all from pups but one that I bought as an untrained 17 month old GSD and trained to a schutzhund 3. I have a private web host showing my progress with a Boerboel and I believe that he is the only one in the USA that has obtained a working schutzhund title Sch A. He also has passed his TDI test and did some therapy work. If you would like to see more of him you can search on YouTube for Boerboel, Gordo. Norman Epstein

Norman,
Thank you so much for sharing your videos. I agree with Cindy as I have her puppies sister and am learning to train the same way.
I love to watch other people work their dogs as I learn a whole lot just from the visual.
I also love the Boerboel breed.
They seem to be smart and athletic as well as loyal from what I have read.
I saw the Cesar Millan episode with singer Patti LaBelle's big male and watching that piqued my curiosity into looking them up.
Good job and keep sharing. If I ever get my new camera figured out as well as my movie making program...(ugh :crazy , I will post some stuff of my dogs and I as well.
Thanks again.
