A good friend of mine the other day said she taught there were a few breeds of german shepherd. I dont have a clue but taught id come to the place that does.
Is what she said true?
Is there a few breeds/varieties of GSD.
Apololgies if im not putting this correctly.
Gavin, there is one breed but two distinct varieties. One variety is the show American style GSD that walks as if weights are tied to its testicles has a roached back and slight of bone and temperament and the working style GSD that should be the opposite in every way in the above described. It is of interest that after 9/11 the AKC paraded some working GSD that worked at the actual site of the destruction. None were the American style and none would have earned there championship based of what is desired by the AKC. Norman Epstein
Actually there are three main "categories" of GSD.
1. Working line - which have a few different groups such as DDR, West German, etc. These dogs are normally bred according to strict breeding standards of function, health, and temperament involving the titling process.
2. German showline - Ideally these are dogs that can do it all. Show in confirmation and work on the field. Titling process is adhered to for breeding standards, but sometimes as a means to an end not as a breed evaluation tool. Many of these dogs titles are questionable.
3. American showline - GSD's that Americans think look "pretty" bred to other GSD's that look "pretty". Working ability, sound structure and strong temperament often are lacking across the board. Known for extreme rear angulation.
