there was a open meeting this afternoon concerning banning "dangerous breeds" here in my very own winston-salem.
You always know it can happen anywhere-but when it finally happens-it is so shocking.
I couldn't go because i had rehearsal. I really wanted to.
Not only pits were being discussed, but dobies, rotties and gsd's(AND mals, etc).
I have what, 3 bulldogs, a gsd mix and a rottie mix....there go all but one of my dogs
I will fight this to the end. If i need to for go school and move, i will.
Anyone here been through this, and have any advice? No decision has been made-btu it does not look good. AC is ranting about how most of their time is taken up with dealing with this breeds-and they "don't have time to deal with these vicious breeds".
I do have a wealth of info on pits and bsl-but is there any info specifically dealing with gsd's and bsl?

Damn Mallory, I'm really sorry to read this. What a bunch of idiots who propose this. They all hate dogs or only have ankle biters. I have been through this and it is horrible. Fight it hard, because if it passes you can have your pups ripped right from your arms like we did here.

That is horrible Mallory, show up at all the meetings concerning this that you can, and take your friends along so you have a more impressive (polite) showing.
Missouri just had a bill heard in committee this week.
SB 886 - Sen. Jolie Justus - Allows any municipality to adopt ordinances, orders or regulations to control dangerous dogs, provided that no such ordinances, orders, or regulations are specific to breed.
This is what we need rather than BSL. Deal with irresponsible dog owners rather than wipe out a bunch of innocent dogs.
You can believe I'll be calling Senator Justus and supporting it.

Oh, I will.
I didn't even know this was being considered here-i had the news on and then the pic of a pit came up with the words BSL , and my heart dropped.
They were showing shelter pits, gsd's and rotties barking in their cages(well no shit, there was a scary camera man on the other side, and no one interacts with them...)
To be fair, they showed a apbt "breeder" in the area with the nicest dogs, all running around together, tails wagging...and the owners were just chanting "it's the irresponsible owners" over and over.
I mean, that's true, but we need something else to say. They were made out to be not so smart, because of the editing.
But since this legislation might affect GSD's too, when i do go to meetings and get to talk, do you all have any sources that i can site or quote about gsd's and bsl?
This whole thing just makes me so mad....

I live in Charlotte, NC. I am shocked that this sort of thing would pop up in the state of North Carolina.
I have been doing my part to argue with anyone that insists that Pit Bulls are dangerous and should be banned. No, I don't own a Pit Bull. I knew that it was just a matter of time before, this BSL non-sense would incorporate more breeds.
If there are going to be more of these hearings perhaps we need to organize a protest against this stupidity. Seeing that they are mentioning a number of breeds, it might be easy to motivate a large number of people to show up.
In addition to verbally fighting BSL, I have embedded positive Pit Bull videos on my website that I have found on youtube.com. I feel that we all need to do whatever we can to prevent this disease from spreading. (BSL)

I know! Being in the "south" and being "country", i really did think people in NC wouldn't take having their bulldogs even considered being banned.
My grandparents who were farmers always had pits and other bulldogs on their farm...

What are some things that can be done to prevent irresponsible owners? Many times, if you can bring a solution (other than the one being planned) it creates a dialog. Especially since you are dealing with laws being passed.
I agree, that the problem is the dog owner and not the dog, but people are hurt and property is destroyed by ill-kept agressive dogs.

Mallory, are these people aware that GSDs are used as seeing eye dogs? (Allow me a little sarcasm - are they aware of anything regarding these breeds of dogs you mentioned...).
Sometimes these "meetings" to discuss local or state policy are not widely publicized and most are completely unaware they're even going on, being usually relegated to some obscure page in a newspaper or mentioned in a 5 second report on TV or radio (if even mentioned at all).
It would be good if you made every seeing eye dog foundation aware of this, especially those in No. Carolina. I'm sure they would love a say at these "meetings".

Hey, great point Sandy. Mallory could find people with GSD seeing eye dogs and ask if they'd like to protest their dog being outlawed.
And if they introduce some clause "except for trained service dogs" - get your bullies service trained. Then they'll be safe. Hopefully.
BSL sucks.

Well perhaps safe from the needle, but not from the hysteria. We had an incident where a woman was asked to leave Walmart because she had an PB breed service dog.......
People really need to be educated. It is so hard not to walk right up to the woman staring me down with discust when I walk my dogs (in a nice tight heel), while her "ankle biter" is pulling and yapping wildly like a little savage and say, "now picture a PB at the end of your lead, not a pretty picture is it"
