I know most of you work with larger breeds, but you also know more about dogs than I do, so I thought I'd ask.
My teenage daughter would like a smaller dog (under 35 lbs.) to use for 4-H showmanship and as a companion. She is currently helping out with our large mix-breed (Walking, grooming, etc.) and is doing well. The dog has to be good with little kids as we have a toddler and has to be a breed that would get along with our current dog. I've tried dog breed selectors, but I get conflicting info sometimes. Can anyone suggest some good breeds that we could research?

What breeds have you got in the results? And what else are you looking for? Fluffy? Short haired? High energy? Low energy?

Take a look at Havanese. I come accross a couple of them and they are energetic but still friendly and gentle.

Grooming, no grooming, energy level, etc.? Those things are big considerations. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are sweet dogs who don't require too much grooming (as in expensive haircuts), but do require brushing to keep them from tangling. I think they're cute, too. Boston Terriers are usually pretty nice, fun little dogs, if you like flat faces and short hair...Min Pins are fun but usually higher energy, and some like kids and some don't (like any other breed!)
Most of those breed selectors are wacky...
Edited to say good call on the Havanese; I couldn't think of that name for the life of me!

Here is a whole page of medium sized dog breeds, maybe your daughter can look through them and pick a few out. Then you can research what each individual breed needs as far as care and health issues. AND as always, when you decide you can let us all know so you can get opinions from us if you like as well......

I had a shetland sheepdog once, and she was a great dog. Easy to train, playful and loved kids. A little hyper maybe, they need something to do. loved to play fetch. Lots of hair though and they need brushing to keep from getting matted.
My favorite med. dog I ever owned was a mutt. I was told when I got her from the shelter she was shepherd/collie mix, but only ended up weighing 25 lbs so, I'm not sure what she was, maybe sheltie mix. Don't discount a good mutt or pound/rescue dog.
Good luck.

Excellent Shody, I did not think of that while I was typing my last post.....I have really FOND memories of all the "mutts' I have ever known as well.

I'm going to voice my support for looking at your local pound/shelter. Should be just the ticket for your and your daughter's situation. While there, you may want to see about a Maltese. I've got one, and never in my life did I think I'd like a small-breed dog as much as I like the Maltese!
Whatever breed you wind up with, please DO go check the shelter or pound. The dogs there are often quite wonderful!
Luck

She wants to show in 4-H, I don't know anything about that. Does it need to be a pure bred or AKC registered or anything?

I like the Sheltie and also the Mini Aussie.
The pound is a great place to start. She can get the satisfaction of saving her dogs life and no puppy issues.
