I have been building Drive, Focus and Grip for 3 months now (DVD Preparing your dog for the helper will be next) and I have noticed a consistent change in my dog's behaviour, his tail is not wagging anymore (and in lower position) and he now bites with the front part of the mouth (still firmly). He still seems to enjoy the training though because at the beginning when I get out the cotton line he starts to jump up with joy. Should I correct the bite so that he bites with his full mouth again, or not?
Another strange change: last time he chased the postman, which surprised me because this dog always brings balls to strangers.
Could it be that his prey drive is getting too high?
If he is not biting full then let him counter and make the bite full. Never let him win with a half full bite. You dont need to correct him, just make him bite it fuller by making her counter and push into it.
If he was biting nice and full before and not anymore, then you are doing something wrong or different. Perhaps stressing the dog too much, or outing the dog too much (dog afraid of losing the prey). Any number of things can cause this.
As for the postman thing, there is no "too high" for prey If this becomes a habbit for the dog then don't let the postman get to the dog.
You are right, Mike, I was outing the dog too much, esp. at the end of the session. That is what I thought also. Thx for the confirmation.
By the way, I have met a nice countrylady at the vet who's father in Belgium used to compete in the Belgium ring sports (am I saying it right?). She confirmed the lack of trainers on the island. Too bad we do not have trainers like you here (sighs). I would not mind a trainer with cooking skills also (mmmm). Ok, I am gone, I am getting hungry...
