Where I live there is a disease called "karapata ziekte" which is a kind of tick disease in which the dog gets becomes severely anemic. One tick is enough to cause the disease, so I use Frontline (applied once a month) for ticks. For heartworm I use Heartguard once a month.
But this site has everything from A to Z so there is a great chance those products are also sold here.
You could check with your vet to get an idea of the types and occurances of diseases in your state related to ticks and heartworms and then evaluate your preventative measures.
