My income tax finally came and I just ordered the Basic Obedience, Dominant & Aggressive Dog, and Competition Heeling DVD's.
I wanted the basic obed for the obvious reason, the dominant dog one for the wealth of information it seems to have in it, and the competition heeling for the focus work which will help tremedously with Sniper's attention span, which is that of a gnat!
I am hoping to get the Establishing pack structure, and remote trainer DVD's also in the very near future.
Now I can't wait to get them and begin learning the proper techniques myself so I can then teach Sniper!
Any other suggestions on other dvd's I should look into??
Sniper is 9 mo old, ESS. I've had him since July 4th. He's one of 4 dogs I have.
yes I train and show in competition obedience and absolutely love doing it and creating the bond between handler and dog. He and my cocker have had some fighting issues (I posted that in another thread a few weeks ago) so the dominant dog video will be a good thing to have and watch and learn from also.
I have been using a prong collar on him in obedience training so far but have discovered that he's relying on that being on to respond quickly to what is asked of him. The minute he knows it's not there he pushes every button he can. He has some respect issues with me right now which we are dealing with through the obedience training and the NILIF program. He's responding well, but slowly. He is a very very hyper springer with an extremely high prey drive. I need to focus that drive while establishing my status over him.
As he and my cocker have fought he now focuses on the cocker and the two cannot be out together at all without a fight. I can live with this, but I need to teach Sniper to focus on me if I wish to show him in a ring which may be shared with another little black cocker he may mistake for the one he's fought with.
He's doing awesome on his obedience thus far, with the prong on, but we have yet to start off leash obedience due to his attention span and distractiblity.
He's a pushy, demanding pup with a mind of his own and very little desire to please me. Something I am totally not used to in a springer as every other one I've owned has always lived to please. Sniper is extremely food and toy driven.
I also need to work the cocker through his dominance issues with both myself and other dogs. He was a rescue and was abused prior to my getting him and I'm afraid I pampered him and am paying the price for that now. So it needs corrected so he can learn to handle life better too. Prior to the puppy the cocker never so much as lifted an eyelash to another dog, but these two simply do not like each other. The cocker is neutered, the pup goes in tomorrow to be neutered. Hopefully a change in testosterone helps a bit too.
