They enlisted an experienced vet to thoroughly examine a couple of dogs with minor things to deal with, and then when undercover folks took the dogs to various vets in the area, the vets prescribed batteries of tests and procedures that cost a ton of money.

Thanks Cindy, that's why this site is so great. If you go into a situation with some understanding of what is going on you have a much better chance of not getting taken advantage of.
It sounds exactly like the car repair stories 60 Minutes did a few years ago where they put a hidden camera under the car. They caught well over 50% of the shops they went to not even performing the work they were charging for. Just poked around underneath for a few minutes then came out with a bill for $500.

While they apparently did a good job of nailing some vets, I think this is the way society in general is going - MDs, auto repair, electronics, computers, you name it. Nobody seems to really know anything anymore, but they all want to do a lot of tests to CYA.
Mike
Mike, if you're going to use the medical profession as an example, let me point you to the number one reason so many tests are done :
the legal profession.
Doctors are held to an incredibly high standard, and if they miss any obscure disease due to not having run virtual boat loads of testing, rest assured, they'll be sued.
If there's a bad outcome, even if it's *no fault* of the doctor, attorneys often convince well-meaning but stupid juries that the patient "deserves" some compensation, and the "doctor has insurance and nobody will be hurt" by giving the poor patient some cash.
Needless to say, the insurance companies will raise their malpractice insurance rates and bingo, we have today's medical malpractice nightmare.
Hence, doctors practice "defensive" medicine, and it hurts the consumers. Thank a lawyer for this state of affairs.
Everyone loses....except the lawyers. And oddly, no one blames them.

Just another benefit of raw feeding - your vet will forget who you and your dog are. And you can factor the savings from those visits into the cost of raw food if you think it costs more.
Awesome.
The benefits of this raw feeding thing just keep getting better and better...
And Will, I think you're very, VERY correct, as the situation applies to people, though I'm not sure the veterinary business is in quite the same state of utter disrepair... from what I've experienced (Mike, I'm sure most of us have at least one very similar story as yours...), and from the feeling I gleaned from this "expose", a lot of vet practices really are just taking advantage of the opportunity to make a few hundred extra left and right - my vet charged me over $400 for a run of the mill neuter! I don't personally know anyone who has sued a vet, nor have a I heard about any cases either... but at the end of the day, it's all back to the dollars again, and not the actual health of the animals, or the respect of their owners.

I totally agree. Everybody has gone into CYA mode just to survive. But don't worry, a national health care system will take care of that. You'll die of your ailment before you ever get to see the doctor.
Sorry, heading toward an off-topic rant, not training related.
