I recently got a new puupy,8 week old Mal, I purchased the "bite traing puppies" video. I have done the work as said on the video. However the video does not say how much time a day, week, or month you should do this. Can anyone help? Currently I do bite work twice a day, when the pup is in drive. I'm a police officer and k9 units in my department say I should not start doing bite work till he is older because Mal's tend not to mature as quickly. Is this true? He seems to be just fine. Also when would I start the drive focus and grip?
The two keys to training a puppy is less is better and avoid the one more time syndrome. It is important with a puppy to end on a good note and while the puppy is still eager for more. 5 to 10 minutes a day is fine for a young puppy.
Everyone in my county has GSD's and one unit had a Dutich Shepard. No one seems to have anything good to say about Mal's. But I think it has to do with the handlers as well. They tell me expect to get bit as least once. I have a 8 yr old GSD/Rot/Pit mix and he has never even growled at me when I correct him. I guess I'll find out as time goes on with training.
Don't take it too hard. If the GSD folks are honest with you... well, let's just say that an awful lot of us have been bitten by our own dogs during training--especially when they're young. And I'm not talking about rank or any kind of deliberate aggression either. The Mal isn't the only breed that can be loaded right off the scale. Probably half the GSD people on this board have dogs that are like that too. I have one myself!
What vincep is saying is right. I beleive that the level of bite training right now will just be a fun game for the dog.So I dont think it matters how mature the dog is. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
it's like ed says, a mal is like a porshe. they're a little more high strung. im doing bitework w/my 10wk old rottie pup, and i do about 2 sessions of 5-10 min.
